ROME GEORGIA, TUESDAY EVENING JUNE 9 1896 NO LYNCHING Negro Chose the lash and it was Administered DEPARTEDTHOSECOASIS For Other fields and Pastures New. Winders Excitement Now on The Wane. Winder, Ga.. June 9. On ac count of a great ma. y citizens claiming tnat the negro, OUver Adair, was half-witted, it was-de cided by the cool-headed citizens of this place, after considering the matter until a late hour last night, to let the law take its course. Sheriff B. H. Collier arrived here early yesterday morning and took Adair to Jefferson jail. There were three negroes accessory to the crime—that is Adair claimed they put him up to entering. Miss Se gers’s room. Two of them were also under arrest —Mitchell Smith and George Butler. The other ne gro’s name is Tom Minifeld. Mitchell Smith is about six feet high and will weigh about 160 pounds and coal black. The ne gro George Butler is also very black and rather clumsy, while Minifeld is a mulatto about twen ty-two or twenty-three yuars old. The three last ones spoken of were given their choice as to tak ing a whipping and leaving town for good or being prosecuted. Mitchell Smith decided to take the whipping and leave. After mak ing his decision Smith was taken by some of our best and coolest | citizens to the ball park and giv |en a whipping that he will never I forget. As the most serious charge against the last three named was making some remarks about some young ladies of our town. Butler and Minifeld were let off without being treated to a dose of the strap, they agreeing also to leave town, All of these negroes are consid ered desperate characters, especial ly Smith and Minifeld, and Win der is fortunate in getting rid of them. If it had not been for the un certainty of Ada’r’s mind he would have been lynched. BARCELONANS MAD And Attempted To Stom The Jail That Holds the As sassians, But Wero Heid in Check, j Barcelona, lune 9. —The excite-j merit caused by the bomb explo sion shows no signs of diminution and the people vigorously demand that no effort be spared by the authorities to punish the authors of the outrage and to guard against a repetition of the das tardly act. When it became generally known that the killed numbered eleven instead of six, the indigna tion of the populace was very vio lent. So threatening was the out look that the authorities, as a measure of precaution, proclaim ed martial law and the city is now under military government. Two more arrests of suspects were made today, making a total of thirty-two men who have been taken into custody on suspicion of having been concerned in the per petuation ofjthe outrage The pris oners are confined in the perfecture Today an angry mob gathered around that building and demand ed the summary punishment of the prisoners, whether his guilt be proved or not. Occasionally it looked as though the mob would attempt to storm the prefecture in order to wreak vengeance on the suspected men. The civil guards on duty at the place were speedily re-ens and were frequently compellled to charge upon the crowd to make them keep their distance. The mob would scatter temporarily, but would soon gather again, threatening to lynch the prisoners IO CENTS A WEEK.
