To a Catholic's Statement About
John Wesley.
Chicago, June 9.—At the Meth
odist ministers’ meeting yesterday
Rev. John Lee. chairman of the
I committee on religious liberty for
I rotestauts in South America,
, presented a report. Mr. Lee said
in part:
“The editor of the New York
Freeman’s Journal, the Rev. L.
A. Lambert, L. L. D., who some
years ago deservedly secured world
wide fame for his noble contribu
tion to Christian litera'ure, ‘Notes
ion Ingersoll,’ has an editorial in
I his paper entitled ‘Sing Low,
i Gentlemen, ’ in which he expresses
I surprise that Me hudist ministers
' should be sc ‘imprudent in push
ing themselves forward as cham
pions ot lolera ion,’ regards it a
’strange’ proceedure Unit, they ‘are
now appealing to tue pope in be
half of religious toleration in
South America,’ humorously asks, i
‘Would it not have been more
I prudent and inure modest in them
to have left the appeal to the pope
in the hands of the Uuakers, - or
same other sect whose lounder
was not so conspicuous a perse
cutor of Catholics?’ and then as
serts that ‘the inflammatory ad
j dresses of John Wesley were the
I prime causes of the great London
anti-Catholic riots in 1780, which
resulted in the death of nearly
500 people. ’
“In the name, not only of
Chicago Methodism, but in the
name of world-wide Methodism,
the committee very respectfully
asks the Rev. Dr. Lambert either
to acknowledge to the American
people that he has blundered or to
give a direct answer to the ques
tion. what reputable historian
makes the assertaion: ‘The in
flammatory addiesses of John
I Wesley were the prime cause of
' the great London anti-Catholic
riots in 1780, which resulted in
the death of i early 500 peoph?' "

Moscow’s Horror Multiplies.
Paris, June 29. —A dispatch has
been received here from Moscow
by a French newspaper present
ing an appalling report of the kill-:
ed and injured at the Moscow hor-1
ror on Hodynsky Plain a week
ago.
The previous reports of the
calamity that occurred during the
wild panic that prevailed during
the monster coronation festival
did not, it io now said, give an !
accurate account of the casualties
and it is believed that nearly or
quite 4000 persons lost their lives
in the frenzied rush and crush of
the mob. The official figures of
the dead now reach the enormous
aggregate of 3,873 persons. The
injured, some of whom will not
survive, number more than 4,000.
The official inquiry ordered by
the Czar to ascertain the causes
leading to the panic, in ordei to
fix the responsibility, is being con
ducted in a vigorous manner. Re
lief committees are also at work
distributing the donations made
by the Emperor and others for
relief of the families ot the
sufferers.

A Child's Heroic Act.
Elmsford, N. Y., June 9.—Thir
teen-year-old Frank Kroll is look
ed upon as the hero of Elmsford.
While he was passing Buckoui’s
pond on the Saw Mill River road
this morning he heard a chiild
crying for help. He ran to the
pond and saw one of his play
mates, Blanche Hallenbeck, strug
gling in the middle of the pond,
which is very deep. Then he saw'
her disappear beneath the surface
of the w.ater.
Withous waiting to remove his
clothes, the boy dived head-first
into the pond ’o rescue his play
mate.
Meanwhile Blanche’s sister,
Inez, seeing her in peril, endeavor
ed to go to her rescue, and she, too,
got h-vond her depth. Frank, al
though somewhat exhausted, did
not hesitate for a moment, and
dived for the second time to res
cue Inez . After a few minutes he
I landed his second playmate also

New York, June 9.—Michael
Shiniw insky, who lives near .Te

Every lurch of the drunken dri

tween times Micheal belabored the
animal unmercifully. Agent Bine
of the Sncie y for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals, arrested
Michael.
An hour later friends of the pris

tion and bailed him out.
Schiwineky had sobered up some
what, and insisted upon unharness
ing the horse. The animal waited
patiently until freed from the wag
on. He then jumped out of the
shafts, and whirling about I'ke a
Hash, kicked his master viciously
m the breast.
The man fell, and the enraged
animal trampled upon him. The
cries of the injured man brought
his son to his assistance. Thej
horse then quietly submitted to j
being led ii.to the stable. Schini-|
winsky is now under the care of a j
doctor, and was unable to appear i
in Court to-day.
