Fla., -'une| 10. —The work ci extermination of 1 non-combatants, or "pacificos, as j th«v are styled here, continues.; Not a day passes without some; shocking story beingtold of bru al assassinations comini'ted by the troops on defenseless people, whose sole crime is that they were wit nesses of the fighting, witcut tak ing any part in it. TYPE OF SPANISH ATROCITY. On June 2 a column of Spanish troops commanded by Colonel Ochoa, operating around Jaruco, Havana P ozince, capiu e 1 Juan Rodrigues, a boy’ of fifteen, who was suffering from nervous pros tration and so weak that he could hardly move without assistance. He was dragged from his home, despite his pitiable condition, he was butchered on the roadway to Tapaste for the sole crime of being a cousin of Victor Simon, a leader in the rebel army. COURT-MARTIAI A MOCKERY. On June Ist Simon Yruri, mem ber of one of the best families of , Jaruco, was arrested on suspicion ! ( of being a rebel sympathizer, by orders oi General Melguizo. He 1 was too well known to be n 1 out of town and ehot in the fields, as this would er ate a scandal, so they made a semblance of a court martial, and with all the apparent , formalities of the law he was pub licly shot in the square of the town. The deed aroused general indig nation whan it was known that I Meiguizo had ordered the execu- ; tion on his own authority without consulting the Captain General, who is the only one empowered to order such proceedings. SHOT DOWN LIKE DOOS. On June 4 Lorenzo Medida, a native of the Canary Island and a cattle dealer of means, and Juan 1 Toledo, a Cuban, owner of a cart gbop, were arrested on no known charges. They’ were lodged in the Civil Guards barrack and tie 1 next morning were taken out of the tewn under | remise of pronq t release and treacherously’ shot behind the slaughter bouse. It is known that Valencia had a fight with Colonel Fondeviel", of Campos Florida fame, in which this “brave” was completely routed, losing 32 dead men left cn the field. This has never been reported officially. DEFECTIONS T.j THE rebel ranks. The Bayamo Guerrilla, about 100 men, commanded by Canino Guerra,* has joined the rebels, seduced thereto by Calixto Garcia when he passed near that place last week. In Sancti Spiritus a band of musicians of the local volunteers, headed by its bandmaster, Justo Alvarez, also went over to the woods to enliven the time tor the revolutionists. HEROIC MEASURES OF THE REBEL*. It is rumored that the insurgents intend to blow up the gas works and cut off the water supp'y of this city. This rumor l.as caused considerable excitement here be cause it is known that the insur gents have accomplished every thing they’ have said they would do. Many peopls are buying a supply of kerosene and making arrangements to get water in case the supply’ is cut off. THE EMBARGO ON CUBAN TOBACCO. New York, June 10.—The Ward liner Seguranca, which arrived here to-day from Havana, brought the last cargo of Havana tobacco from Cuba which will arrive here until Captain General Weylet’s order prohibiting the shipment ol tobacco from the isl. nd shall have been rescinded.
