Athens, Ga , June 15.—The so- ;
c ial whirl of commencement is g<-
j ug on and along with it is a vig
orous fight in the board of trus
ts concerning the abo ition of j
comni' j nceme<it daiaces.
This matter furnished the first
breeze in the board of trustees and
it was blowing at a rapid rate Sat
urday niorniug at the meeting of [
that body.
For several days it has been j
known that Dr. W. H. Felton, of I
Cartersville, Ga , was loaded on I
this line, and the public has await-.
eu the fight tha the proposed to I
make in the meeting of the board
of trustees.
Saturday m»rn ing the doctor
unhmbered his guns and when the
board met he began to pour hot
ehot into the custom of giving
commencemner germane. He spoke
at some length before the board
and reviewed ithe matter thorough
ly.
There is a sentiment in favor of
Dr. Felton’s measure, but there
are a number of trustees who take
the position that these german’s
are private afiairs over which they
can exercise no control, and that,
they do not represent any college
action, but simply are the work of
a few stud-nts who das’.ce and who
arrange them fur themselves.
The matter was referred to the
proper authorities, that is the com
mittee of the board erf trustees
having such matters in charge,
and that commi tee will next
week make .ts report as to what
shall be done. Meanwhile the dis
cussion will continue among the
people and will be the topic of
interest.

opinion in the States of 1 abasco

pitiful condition of the peens, who
are practically reduced to slavery

One of the most recent cases of
cruelty was that of an Indian in

Havana, June 15. —Thomas
Dawley, the correspondent of Har
per’s Weekly who was arrested
some time ago on the charge of
being in communication with the
rebels, has been released from
Monro where he has been confined
ever since he was taken into cus
tody.
Incomplete details have been
received of on important battle at
Najasi. Unofficial reports states
that Gomez was in command of
the rebels, who numbered 5,000
men. He made a manouvre with
the intension of surrounding the
troops who were encamped on the
plains of Saratogo. The manoeu
vre failed of the desired effect,
which was to compel the Spanish
force to retreat. The rebels then
attacked the troops with machets,
. but tlie latter repulsed the charg
es. The battle is said to have last
ed forty-two hours.
General Godoy, with astrong
Spanish ferce, arrived on the
scene and with his assistance the
troops succeeded in forcing th®
j rebels to retire. Th® rebel loss is
said to Lave been 500, while the
tr.u_ps lost only four killed, s’; I
two officers and thirty-two soldiers
wounded.
Later details may place the en
gagement in an entirely different
’ aspect. The battle is said to have
been similar to that which took
place at Guasimaa, in the last
war.
Last night dynamite explosions
occurred under two bridges on the
road leading to Cerro and Jesus
del Monte, suburbs of Havana.
The explosion caused a paric

bridges was slight.
Storm OF Litite snakes.
Bradford, Pa., June 15. —A won
derful storm happened at East
Aurora. F. F. Green, a resident of
that town, walked in his garden to
look at his strawberries after the
rain was over, and was surprised
to find the vines covered with di
minutive snakes.
They were wriggling over the
vines in a livedy manner. Green
found lhe tiny reptiles scattered
over half an acre of his garden.
They ranged in length from an
inch to ten inches, and the long
est were as large round as a lead
pencil. In color they were a dark
brown orblack, with light-colored
heads.

Mr. M. T. Thompson, official in

referred to surprised them. In re
plying to Mr. Thom pson, General
Wise writes :
“You ask whether there will be
any objection made to the United

and add in effect that you have
learned that there will be. The
