HE AND CAPT. JBNLVIh
The Only Exceptions to the
Rile of Democratic Victory,
in the Good old County
< f Floyd.
~"W
The battle is over and the last
ballot has been counted by the
weary managers while the tired
tally clerks haye done their du'y
and have gone to rest. With two
« ceptions the Hustler of Rome’s
predictions, made several weeks
ago and repeated yesterday, after
noon have been made good.
The first break of the democrat
ic column is the loss of its head,
so far as Floyd is concerned. Hon.
Seaborn Wright, the pjprohi can
didate's r governor, has carried
the county by a small majuitv
over Governor W. Y. Atkinson.
There are many reasons why this
happened, one of the main ones
Icing the fact that this s his home
county. Then there seems to have
baen quite a free use of “silent”
dollars and “dry” liquor in many
sections of the county. But after
all, the most “effective” reason is
that he got the most votes.
The review of the'figures be ow,
show that Mr. Wright ran far
ah<*ad of his ticket while Governor
Atkinson ran behind showing that
many democrats bad voted for the
former from a personal f. iendshi j
or county pride feeling. Another
reason Governor Atkinson ran !»•»
h.nd I. is ticket was because it wa
inoustri >usly circulated through
the county, on the eve of and the
day of the e’ection that the govern
or was an uncompromising “no
fence” man. But the vote has
been polled and fairly counted and
the figures aie final.
The other brake in the line is
the defeat of Capt. Felix Corput,
tor the Capt. J. P.
Nevin the cam i late of the labor
•Tganizations coining in. Capt,
N-vin. will probably be the young
est member of. the geiferal ussem
bly. being onlv 23 years of age.
Hh rm a magnificent race, surpris

r B. Capt. Corpur, the fourth man

'neu in Georgia, as has been di -

life.
All the otl e’ democratic nomi

couple of good men who were
working in double harness.
Mr. Fos er has carried the county
by h good vote over Mr- Cowan.
Treasurer Hill, Ckra BeyeKgd
and Surveyor J. T. Moore had no
opposition.At 5 o’clock the vote at
the Rome box had been counted
and the managers were summing
up. A hasty estimate made by
Hustler of Rome gives the coun
ty to Mr. Wright by 260 votes.

Georgia is still in the Demo
cratic ranks and estab ished there I
more securely than every before.
The returns that are in point to
one of the biggest Democratic
majorities ever given in the state.
The Constitution places Atkin
spn’s total majority over Wright
at 39,672. This is a bighly credit
able gain over his last majority of
24,161 of two years ago.
The official returns can not be
hud of all the counties but the
Democratic side is sure not to
shrink.
Both branches of the legislature
are in the hands of
or as some disappointed pops call
them, the Damocrats.
At any rate Georgia is safe.
Combined prohibitionist, popu
list and republican parties and in
fluences were unable to defeat the
grand old democratic party with a
staunch, fearless leader like W.
Y. Atkinson.
Chairman Steve Clay was seen
by a Constitution man last night
and said:
“We have made a gallant fight.
We have redeemed Bartow, Pauld
ing and probably Polk. We have
redeemed Harris, Merriwether,
Marion, Chattahoochee, Carroll,
Campbell and also Pike. lam con-1

This seems to Luve resulted in
urgely increasing our democratic
majority.
It is all bosh to cry out that the
democrats are not iu favor of fair
el ctions. From the beginning of
this campaign till the polls have
closed, the democratic committee
has stood for fair elections, and
did everything in its power to Hid
in giving an honest and fair count.
The populists said before the elec
tion was held that they would be
defrauded. The election has now
been held. They have had their
managers under a registration kiw
that guards against fraud, and
doubtless the better class of popu
ists will be satisfied with the re
sult.
