NO NEW CASES PI SELMA.
Selma, Ala.,Oct. L'», —The fever
situation in this city is decidedly
encouraging. All of the sick me
doing v.ell an I the 1. ver is of so
mild a tx pj is is scarcely to be
dreaded . New cases wi re repoi ted.
Two of the sick were discharged.
Despite the favoi ab’e cutlook, bus
iness is dead. Fully half of the
stores remained closed closed
throughout the day. and others
opened at 9 and closed at 4 o’clock.
Business on all the railroads is
suspended, excepting an occasion
al refugee tram. About all who
are going have now gone and the
city looks deserted. On many of
the streets only three or four fam
ilies remain. The robbery and
burning of the Coe residence Sun
day morning has aroused the peo
ple to the fait that the disease is
not the gravest situation they have
to face.
Last ni Jit five policemen and’
five citizens armed with shotguns!
and orders to shoot, patrolled each
ward. This arrangement, thanks
to the city officials and the Citi
zen’s Relief As ociation, is perma
nent. In addition to this a num -
her of citizens are sleeping at
each engine house, ready to re
spond to alarms. Twice last night
thry were called out. All indus
tries and the railroad shops and
schoo's have been requested to be
closed until frost.
The mayor issued a proclama
tion today wanii g all persons to
he off the streets by 8 o’clock un
der penalty of arrest and fine. '1 he
thermometer was down to 48 this
morning. Dr. Guiteras is being
severely criti ised by several doc
tors and many citizens, and S3OO
was raised today toward bringing
anot her expert here, bvt the plan
has not bei n earned through.

here to know if Im coni 1 not send
refugees from the infected dis
tricts into this city. Mayor 1 ro-
