through the strong iron bars of
the floor with steel drills. They
got through in the same manner

ers escaped last June. 1 hey cut
off all the communication by cut

wires.

The lynchers were just prepar

the prisoner all night, rearing that

him back to jail the mob wou’d
get him, when the Warrior Guards,
of Tuscaloosa, dmve up in four
two-horse Wflg r ns and dispersed
the throng.
The soldiers surrounded the
court house, allowing none bu. of
ficers of the court and others inter
ested to pass the lines. Court was
reconvened promptly at 9 o’clock
and the trial proceeded. By noon
it was over ami Beard had been
sentenced by Judge Sprott to harg
on December 10th,
After the trial Beard was taken
back to jail, where a military
guard was placed and will be held

Railroad by a north-bound
express train.
They had just returned from

witnesses in the case of Judge
Clayton against the Philadeljhia
& Reading Railroad Company.
They were walking on the track

Both men have been prominent
in manufacturing circles in this
