MADE BY GOVERNOR OF AR.
KANSAS ON FOOTBALL
BSEISH IT FROM STATE
11 Liko Prize Fighting, It Mi st
Go,'’ He Say«.
Little Rock, Ark., Deo. 2—Gov
ernor Dun \V. Jones hag b«gun a
icrusade against fooball and ig de-
I termitied to banish it from the
UState.
“It is, as played in these match
I games, brutal and disgusted.”
he said, “and I can not find
words strong enough to show forth
all its viciougness. It is no f at
ill athletic sp r , but is degrading
fad as it is now conducted, rank
ing with prize fights and kindred
evils. The higher civilizatiin
which we profess is utterly at
variance wi’h the toleration of
such a game.
“I have one of my sons as a
pupil in a standard Tennessee col
leagc. 1 didn’t send inm there to
learn to football. I sent him there
to develop his mental fac
ulties and fit him to be a good
and useful cit’zen.
BELIEVED r X I’HYBIC L CULTURE .
“Os Course I don’t mean that
physical culture and development
should not be tolerated. Ou the
contrary. I believe a certain
amount of exercise is necessary,
but football is not the sort of ex
ercise needed,
“I have stopped the playing of
match games at the State Univer
si'y at F ivet’sviile. The students
played their last match game on
I'hank'giving Day at Arkadelphia.
Two of tin Profesors stopped here
on their way home from the ganni
and tried to get me tn permit the)
playing to go on, but I refused.
As I have stated, no such sport
shall, il I can prevent it, be toler
at'd in the State. Like prize
fighting, it must go. |

LONDON PRISON
May HAVE FOR OCCUPANT
JIMMIE MICHAEL,
CHAMPION BICYCLIST
He Weil N vtße In| New York
To Race With Taylore,
Mew York, Deo. 2. Will “Jim
my Michael, the champion bicy
clist of the world ard the idol of
American cycle race patrons,
spend Christmas in a London
jail? This is a startling proposi
tion in view of the fact that the
announcement has been made that
the Welsh midget will meet Tay
loge, the Frenchman in a paced
race at Madison Square Garden
on the eveniug of Christmas
Day.
‘ But according to the state
ment made by “Choppy” Whar
burton former manager and train
er of Micheal, to a newspaper
correspondent in Paris, the fa
mous racing man will be missing
from the garden on that night.
Wharburton is reported to have
said that Micheal has ruined him
financially and that the latter
will certainly be in Holloway
Street Jail, London, before Christ
mas Day.
“You may say that Micheal
will eat hie Christmas turkey in
New Yoyk City,” said David
Shafer, the midget’s present man
ager when questioned at the Hotel
Bartholdt last night in regard to
this matter.
“Neither ‘Jimmy’ nori can un
derstand the remarkable state
ment of Wharburtou,” said Shaf
er. “Wharburton, was accused
of having drugged Michiel before
a race in which ‘Jimmy’ was de
feated and the publication of
that accusation caused Wharbur
tou’s suspeusion by the N. C. U.
and lost him his position as
manager of a racing team,
“He is now probably incensed
at seeing Micheal making money
in this country, while without
employment himself.
“Micheal is not afraid to re
turn to England but he has bus
iness engagements up to the first
of the year in America, and will
not put himself out to obiige
several persons across the water.
He is going home fora visit iu
January’ and, if wanted then, w>ll
willingly go ou the witness
stand.”

HELD UP PRIEST
COVER WITH A REVOLVER
WHEN HE WENT TO DOOR.
ANDROBBEDANDEJEGTED
Thief Lacked The Door and Ran
sacked The Hoube.
Rushville, Ind.. Dec. 2—Last
night Rev. T. M. Logau, rectcr of
the Catholic Church here was held
up in his home, robbed and then
ejected from his house, while the
daring brglar went through .the
premises.
Father Logan was called to the
door by a well dressed stranger,
who said he wanted to make a sick
call.
As seen as the priest appeared
a revolver was thrust in his face
and he was compelled to hold up
his hands.
The robber took what valuables
Father Logan had on his person,
ammounting to considerable, then
seizing the priest by the neck,
pushed him outside and locked
the door. The robber went through
the house at his leisure, while
Father Logau sought for help
from the neighbors.
The burglar escaped, but took
nothing from the house.
COMBINATION.
Biggest Ever Attempted forming
At Pittsburg.
Pittsbu’g D>c. 2—The biggest
combination of river coal interests
ever attempted promises to bo ef
fected bes to the new year.
It has been talked of for yea r s
but has at last come to a focus.
A committee, consisting of Capt.
W. W. O’Neil, president of the
W. W. O'Neil Coal Company, and
of the Pittsburg Coal Exchange,
Capt. S. S. Brown, of W. H.
Brown's Sols, and Cspt. John A.
Wood, of the firm of J. A. Wood
& Son, ie hard at work considering
the schedu'es of property values
as presented by the separate coal
companies operating on the river.
There is a slight discussion in
the ranks, but it is not consider
ed to be sufficient to block the way
of a speedy consolidation. The
scheme, which is stupendous in
nature, proposes the organization
of one company with a capita'iza
tion of $11,000,000. It is to be a
huge trust, controlling the river
coal interests from Lock No. 5, on
the Monongahela river, to New
Orleans.
The primary objects of the com
binationjis to reduce expenses in
both mining ana shipping. The
Pittsburg operators hope by this
means to successfully compete
with the Kanawha river product.
It is claimed that it is but to reap
the reward that will be gained in
the reduction of opeatingexpences.
The eliminition of the cutting
done by th' Pittsburg shippers is
also expected to contribute to the
dividends.
