CRACKERS UNITE
NEW CORPORATION A CAPI
TALIZATION OF $55 000.000.
HASBEEN CONSUMMATED
All Fig Bakeries in The Country
Under One Management.
Pittsburg. Pa. Deo. 20. —S. 8.
Marvin, president of the Uninted
States Baking Company, returned
cd from Now York today and
ann triced nthat. the consoli
dation of three cracker companies
of the United States is an assured
fact
The deal has been practicality
consummated, and only details of
organization remain to be settled.
The cayitalization of the big
combine, he says, will be $55,000,
000 and it will be in opperation by
January 1, 1898.
The three companies entering
the trust a’e the York Biscuit
Company, the American Biking
Company and the United States
Baking Company. The latter is
now capitaliz'd at $5 000,000
while the other two are rati d at
$10,000,000 each.
Mr. Marvin says of the $55,•
000,000 c ipitai $25,000,000 will
be preferred stock and S3O 000
009 cowmon. The preferred will
be issued in shares of $10f) each.
He says the great primary ob
ject of the combine is to invade
foreign markets and open up an
outlet for tbe overproduction of
bakerliei in this country. Another
object is to establish a co-opera
tive company —mein which the
employees can have an opportu
nity’ to own stock by investing
their savings in that way in
stead of depositing in banks.
The location of the headquarters
of the new company has not
been decided upon, but New
York seems to be generally fav
ored •
A meeting of the companies
will be held in a few days to
elect officers and settle the de
tails.

MARCH OF THE BRIGADE
DOWN BARA VALLEY
HEMMED IN BY NATIVES.
Difficulties Almost Unsurmount
able, Enkmy Relentless.
London, Dec. 18. —Later di
tails were Received today of the
march of General Westmacott’s
brigade down the Bara Valley and
they indicate that the obstacles to
the retreat are more serious than
supposed. A dispatch from the
correspondent of the Reuter Tele
gram Company at Mamani, dated
Dacenibei 11, says :
“The troops had io march in a
river bed, 500 yards wide, swelled
from the melting snow and ice
cold. On the right were sheer
brush covered ranges,reaching up
to the snow level, and on the left
were cliffs, all the heights being
occupied by natives
“The baggage trair, the stretch
er bearers, the over loaded ammu
nition ponies, which became
swamped in the stream, the hos
pitals, with iim-s filled with
stretchers and the crowds of camp
followers were all mixed in inex
tricable confusion, a struggling
mass wading knee-deep in the
freez ng water, urged onward by
the knowledge that a relentless foe
was in the rear.”
AAnother account says : “There
was fierce fighting at all hours of
the day and night. The rearguard
was continually harrassed and
several times miraculously escap
ed being separated from the main
column and massacred. Tho
troops behaved splendidly under
almost unsurmountable difficul
ties and when attacked openly
poured a withering fire into the
natives who pressed forward al
most to the bayonets’ points once
before being repulsed with a loss of
400 men. The British loss also
was heavy.
Disasis oftel lurk in thi blood
belore they openly manifest them
selves. Therefore keep the blood
