The mystery of woman-w
hood is full of deep \
unanswerable enigmas. 7/ x
Why should women be u \
compelled to suffer sitn- (
ply because they are wo
men? Why is it that the
source of their highest joys is at the same
time the cause of their greatest wretched
ness? The very attributes which make it
possible for women to be happy wives and
mothers also render them liable to the ut
most physical misery and pain.
The sufferings of body and mind caused
by some weakness of the distinctly feminine
organs are so almost universal among wo
men that the question might well be asked:
Is this Nature’s punishment for the crime
of being a woman ? ”
The true answer is No! These sufferings
are nq.lh r natural nor necessary. They
would not exist if the organism was healthy
No woman ov.'tht to endure such troubles
There is no need of it. Dr Pierce’s Favor
ite Prescription is a perfect and positive
cure for feminine weakness and disease.
It gives health and strength to the spe
cialorgans and nerve-centres; heals inflam
mation; stops wea suing drains; promotes
functional regularity and restores the nor
mal, vigorous and painless condiuon which
Nature intended.
It is the only medicine of its kind in
vented by an educated and experienced
physician. It is the only medicine which
makes baby’s coming safe and compara
tively painless.
Any woman who would like to know
more about this medicine and about her
own physiciai make-up should send 21 one
cent stamps to Dr R. V. Pierce, Buffalo
N. Y., to pay the cost of mailing only on an
absolutely free copy of his thousand-page

THE PENSION WIDOW,
The recent airing in congress of
"Ur national scandal—the pension
list—has brought to notice some
I unique features of this great fraud
upon the taxpayer? of this coun
try. One interesting phase of 'he
matter is the pension window, or
the widow whw married an old
soldier for the express purpose of
getting his pension or for apply
ing for one after he dies.
In the debate last week stress
was laid on growing scandal of
the marriage of veterans by wom
en obviously anxious to obtain
the pensi n muney; Senator Gal
linger. < f New Hampshire, declar
ed hiim- If in favor of a law pro
hibiting tbe payment of pensions
to the widows of soldiers who had
been married after the passage of
the 'aw allowing the pension.
In the house Mr, Allen, of Miss
issippi, asst rted that a common
thing wus the payment of pen
sions to widows of soldiers who
themselves, in life, made no ap
plication. Many of these widows,
be said, had subsquenlly married,
and their pensien money was us
ed to set up the second husband in
business, and he added that the
ommissioner of pensions was of
ibe opinion that SIO,OOO a day was

kind.
A sinificant fact is that while
