E DE FENDANT MA DE II IS STATEMENT. LLOQUINT IN DEFENSE And Attorneys are now Addres sing THE J 1 RY. The Bridg< s case drew another large audience at th? courthouse again today The defense sprung a surprise upon the prosecution this morn ing by closing their side with the defendant’s statement as the only evidence introduced by them, The attorneys for the defense, finding the state’s care so much weaker than upon the former tral, decided that, it would only be a waste of time and a continued in convenience to the jury to put in evidence of r buttal nature. The defendant’s statement was not nearly so long as upon the former trial but was decidedly in teresting from the outset and grew thrilling in its languageand delivery un il in its close i was decidedly eloquent Each side a,ked the court for extra time and Judge Joel Bran han opened for the defense in one of the ablest efforts he ever made before a jury. He was fallowed by City Court Judge George Harris who at 3 o’clock this afternoon is address ing the jury for the prosecution. Judge Harris will be followed by Solicitor General Mose Wright who will close for the state. Major Fouche will close for the defense. As each side- has five hours for speaking the prob abilities are that his Honor will not charce the jury before tomor row morning. The startling infurmation is given out that every foot of Havanna harbour, where the Maine is sta tioned, is mined, drawn off into squar. e, and each square connected with a numbered keyboard on land so that, with the pressing of a particular button, the Maine could be blown out of existence. The Spanish land puns are lar ger than those on the Maine, and are said to be well handled. Ic is doubtful whether the Maine could make any considerable re sistance whether she is now an chored, the bay being too nairow for firing. The Maine hos 31 officers and 3e3 men aboard. The cost of keep ing the ship in fighting condition is about SIOOO a day. WHEN SPANIARD ARRIVES Shore Leave Will Probably Be Granted. New York, Jan. 27.—The an nouncement cf the Spanish Gov erment that it would, iu the near future eend the man-of-war Vis cays to American ports to return 'he visit of “courtesy” which the United Stat s battle-ship Maine is now making to Havana recalls an incident which occurred in April last when two Spanish ships of war the cruiseis Infant Labella and Maria Theresa, were in New York harbor to take part in the cere monies attending the dedication of the Greaud momument. The Spanish ships were anchored in the North River, together with an imposing fleet cf warships of other foreign Nations and the Uuited States. A long line of merchantmen and excursion boats filled with people, sailed up one side and then aroued the warships Cheers and shouts fil ed the air as the ships slowly steamed by the American, British German French and Italian men-of-war but an ominious silenco followed and in some cases hisses ensued when the Spanish shipe were passed. The incident plain’y showed that Americans were discontented then with Spain’s policy towards the Cubans. This feeling has certainly not becd alloyed since and unpleasant cons 1 quences may follow the advent of Spanish ships of war in our ports. The Spanish sailors of the In fanta Isabella and Maria Theresa were not allowed shore leave last Asril because their officers fea.d violence This policy will likely be followed during the com.ng visit, thus lessening • the danger ot trouble.
