" The law says that all legal prin
ting must be paid for in advance,
and in the futnre the Huzlehurst
News will strictly adhere to
this rule, PUBLISHER,
Passiag thoughts do not show
a man what he is. DBut the
direction his thoughts and feel
ings usually take give abundant
_evidence. ¥ ‘
It may help us to have a truer
estimate of life and to live|
accordingly to remember that
there are three things we can
never recall—the spoken word,
the lost opportunity «nd the life
that is spent,
Funeral sermons and tomb.
stones are usually alike in the
oulogy they pay the departed.
Some of the dead, if they could
only come back and hear and
read what is said or written of
them, would not know themseles,
No wonder a spirit when asked
said that he was perfectly hap
py because he was amazed and
delighted with what was written
on his tombstone,
Like Banquo’s ghost, there are
some things in the social world
that will not down, much as we
desire it. Among them are the
Thaw case, the Duke of Abruzzi,
and the squabbles between Anna
Gould’s ex-husband and present
husband. We would like to forget
them but the fervid imagination
and persistency of some news
papers will not let us.
»~ Whether or not the plan just
carried out by several thousand
yvoung peopiein Cleveland, Ohio,
and which is beinzg imitated
elsewhere, of ‘“living for two
weeks as Jesus would,” has any
permanent value derends upon
the .lintention of those who fol
low-it. If the attempt is for two
weeks only and ‘with the idea
that the bars may be let down
aftéerwards it will spell failure.
But if the idea is to make the
trial anincentive and help to a
permanent better life of conduct
and service, lasting good may be
expected. |
"If a wealthy banker or trust
magnate is convicted of embezzle
ment cr other erime and.is sent
enced to prison, persistent efforts
are sure to be made to have him
pardoned after he has served but
a few months, and for some rea
son or other the attempt usually
succeeds. We fail to see why
this should be. Why shouid a
man who defrauds hundreds of
his fellow men, and who by his
wrongdoing reduces families to
poverty and perhaps causes some
wretched vietim to commit
suicide, receive greater con
sideration than a poor man who
is sentenced to a long term of
imprisonment because, perhaps
in his necessity, he stole some
thing? 1f anything it should
¢ work the other way for the higher
the position and the responsibil
ity the graver the offence when
it is committed. %
