The law. saj s that all legal prin
ting must be paid for in advance,
and in the futare the Hazlehurst
News will strictly adhere to
this rule. PUBLISHER.
You Are Wrong, Young
Man.
Ayoung man readinga newspa
per the other -<day chanced to
find his name in a news item ina
connection not particularly
agreeable. Thereupon he began
to abuse the editor, and amon~
other things remarked that if he
“had done anything good, the
paper never would have puolish
ed it+’’ The young man was whol-
Iy wrong inhis judgement of
newspapers. The fact is, :one of
the keenest pleasures that comes
to newspaper men—one of the
greatest compensations of their
lives—is the oft-recurring
oppertunities they find of dealing
out kind words,~and 'of ' chroni
cling good whéreever it may find
its appearance.! NO mnewspaper
worthy of the name ever allows
its columns to reflect the per-]
sonal preferences or prejudices
of its editor. Itis rare, indeed,
that the bitterest enemy of the
editor does not get the fairest
2nd most considerate treatment
in the news columns of his pa
per. Ifany one does anything:
commendable the newspaper
hastens to proclaimi it'with full
credit, and whetherr he who per
formed the ‘worthy ‘deed is
friend or foe, it is mot permitted
to color the account one iota.
Such is the unwritten law in the
office of every real newspaper.
The impression that some pec
vle labor under that their nawmes,
connection with & news item,
are maliciously or because of
an unfrienuly; feeling ‘on the
part of the editor, is wholly un
tounded. Our'advice to all such
is to go ahead and do something
worthy of praise, and see how
quickly the newspaper will tell
about it, giving due credit, and
dealing with the utmost 'gen
erosity and‘/impartiality. As a
matter of fact, if there were any
inclination on the part of newspa
per people to be spiteful or
malevolent, the opportunities are
limitless for giving unpleasant
publicity to any whom they
might single out. But, on the
contrary, the charity and good:
nature that prevail in newspaper
offices, as a rule are continually
shield the guilty¥ ahd 'thé unfor
tunate, and - softening. the force
of public censuré ard'criticism.
There are few people who live in
it community any length of time
wiio do not’ ewe the me&wpaper
*sbmething in this reSpect-—either
of their own person, or in behalf
of some relative of friend.
‘We have done” 'stdpped buying

country editors, on last Saturday
we had brought to our oftice, one
bushel of sweet potatoes, six
pounds of honre-made, well sea
soned pork sausage,” and three
dozen fresh’ eggs. Yum, yum,

at peace with the * world and all
