"Palindromes. :
A palindrome is a word or sen
tence that reads the same forward
or baclward. The making of palin
dromes in Lztin was at one time a
favorite pastime. It calls for the
exercise of some constructive and
analytic skill.. Not. many English
palindromes are known. The sup
posed self introduction of the father
of humanity to his quandam rib is
the most familiar: :
“Madam, ’'m Adam.”
~ Sometimes an unintentional pal
indrome comes to light, as in the
shop sign in Yreka, Cal.:
“Yreka Bakery.”
Palindromes of considerable
length may be evolved—as, for in
stance, the supposed reply the girl
makes to her mother’s question re
garding the progress «f the class in

: Wrong Again,
A political speaker was attacking
the government of the day with
more venom than reason. A man
at the back of the hall at last cried
out, “You’re wrong, sir!” A little
nettled, the orator continued with
out heeding. Presently, in answer
to another strong assertion, came
again, “You’re wrong, sir!” The
speaker looked angry, but continued
on the warpath. “You’re wrong,
sir!” again rang out..
Angrily addressing the persistent
one, the orator cried: “Look here!
I could tell .this man something
about this government which would
-make his hair stand on end!”
“You’re wrong again, sir!” came
exultantly from the -eritic as he
stood up and removed his hat. lis
head was as bald as the proverbial
billiard ball.—London Globe.

. Knew His Limitations, .
“1 proph'sied he’d make a Yvinz,'™
Mr. Hobart said, speaking of & New
York painter who spent 2 summer atf
his farm, S‘because he kmew what Le
could do, litic as 'twas, and didn't toy'
to fly too high. ;
“Yes,” Mr. Ilobart continued, with a
thoughtful sinile, ‘“you couldn’t get
him to attempt any foolish flizhts.
All that sammer he set out in the hem
yvard, painting hens, or else out back
o’ the barn, painting pigs. And whem
I said to hiui, ‘Look a-heére, when Ab@
Towler comes to paint the house Pl
zet him to show {vu how and let you
take a hack at the side end, where
‘twon’t show so much and allow it on
yvour board,’ he just shook his head
and smiled that kind o’ gentle, sorrow
ful smile o’ his, and su;{u he: ‘I couldn't
think of it, Mr. Hobart, I should just
ruin the looks o’ the house. I'll kecp
to the pigs and the hens, for I know
my limitations.’
- “Well, 'twas a real reltef to me, oni
I suppose likely he would have botch
ed the job consid’able. And T said to
him then real hTfly, “Young man,
Iyou’ll ‘earn your Mving yet, for you
} ain’t all et up with pride and@ ambi
tion,’ and my words have.come true,
by what I hean”—Youthis Companion.
