The Woedmea Banquet 2
GrandSpcces?. r
" The banquet, given by the
Woodmen a%a the academy Fon
Friday night lagt, was a grand
success ih every sense of the
“ word. The house was packed
with Woodmen'ind their fami
lies, and with inyited guests. ‘
Mr. A. T. Vonderau was mas
ter of ceremonies, iniroducing
the speakers, and doing every
thing within his power to make
the lurge audienge Have a good
t{)!ile. And, he suceeded admir
ably. o e
~ Col. J. R, Grant W’fl the spegk
er of the avening. e made a
fine speech, giving the history
of this organization, and the
much good it had accomplished
during tlie past njinetgen yeays.
Everybody present seemed to be
highly pleased with his address,
for while it was short, it was a
good one. Rev. J. M. DeFoor,
Judge Julian H, Parker and
Rev. J. S, Jorgan, were all called
upon to deljyer gddresses. Every
one of they regponded and made
good talks, Judge Parker seem
ed to be at his hest gp this oc:
casion and his spegch was Mghly
enjoyed,
We remained at the academy
wup tp 10 o'clack, and %tt.ef the
fourth goypse— ¢§ks and cream
?ad been sgrved, we dggt our
ittle bpys together and pulled
out for home, fearing that " if we
remained, we all would get into
the same fix our gepial post
master got into a Sunday ar two
;gg from eating too much--foun: 1
‘ e
We have three little orphans
who had never beforg had all the
sodawater bananas, oyanges, ice
cream apd cale that they cauld
eat—save on this occasion.
When we left the academy Leo
and Bob sgid that this was the
first time ip their lives, that they
had to refuse ice cream and cake.
The Lord knows thatwe have
offtimes tried te fill theyy upon
luxuries of this kind, but failed.
- Willie, our ' youngest, cried
while enroute home, We thought
that he was sick, or had stuck a
aail in his foot, or something of
the kind. - When we aprrived at
our rooi we called him to us,
and asked him if he was sick?
‘“No sir,” pne- replied. We
asked him had he cut
his foot with a piece of glass, or
had stuck- & pail in it? He. said;
*No, Sir,”” " Then, what is the
matter with you? Why have you
'%s:ied all the way from the school
‘Biouse hotne?! He said:
~ " ’Cause I eat so much before
‘they brought the cake and ice
cream afouad 'til I couldn’t eat
but a little bit of it, and had to
come away and leave it, and that
was what I wad cryinig wbout
My stemach wus te full of othep
good things that it wouldn’t
kold the cak® bhid ice cream.”
And, we will venture the ass
sertion, thas nany others left
vhe academy F'riday nigit secret
ly weepitig, because ihey had
eaten so much that they coulds’t
get throwgh with their cake and
cream, for it was certainly
nice.
If the guests present didn’t
enjoy this occasion it was mno
fault of the ‘‘choppers,” for
they certginly did everything
within their power to make
every one piresent enjoy #his
