Measure Went Through Senate
By Vote of 42 to 24,
Insurgent Republican Senators Resent.

Read Out of Party.
Washington, D, C.~—The tariff bill
passed the senate by a vote of 45
10 34, Republicans voting in the neg
ative were Deveridge of Indiana, Bris
tow of Arkansas, Brown of Nebraska,
Burkett of Nebraska, Clapp of Minne
sota, Crawford of South l)almba. Cum
mins of lowa, Dolliver of Idwa, La
Folelite of Wiscousin and Nelson of
Minnesota, McEnery of Louisiana was
the only democrat recorded in the af
firmative,
Mr, Gore delivered a final denuncia
tion of the entire system of protection
as exemplified in the bill,

the promise made to the people by
the republican party respecting a re
vision of the tariff downward, was
the theme of Senator Beveridge, as
the debate on the pending bill was
drawing to a close.
Mr. Beveridge was answered by Mr.
Aldrich, who said he had often seen
men interpret their own judgment
as the judgment of tkeir party.
Mr. Aldrich declared that the pend
ing bill was a fulfiliment of the pai
ty’s pledge. ™ If senators wished to
vote against the bill, he said, they
should not attempt to speak for their
party.
Mr. Crawford delivered a vigorous
protest against any attempt upon the
part of Chairman Aldrich to prevent
republican senators from the exercise
of their judgment.
Senator Clapp also joined in the
protest against any effort on the part
of the present senator from Rhode Isl
and to control his actions,
The bhill was then put on its pass
age, It was passed 45 Lo 34.
Much interest was aroused in the
senate over the adeption of the amend
ment of Senaior Bradley removing the
restrictions on the {ree sale of tobacco
in the hand.
This action was the result of many
vears of agitation and of much active
recent campaigning,
The Bradley amendment authorizes
anyone, the grower, any person to
whom he may malie transfer, or any
one else, to sell tobacco in the hand
without paying a tax, but requires
that when the sale exceeds ten
pounds, a record shall be Lkept for
the benefit of the internal revenue
service.
The present law permits the grow
er to dispose of his product, but does
not allow his vendee to transfer it
without paving a tax of six cents a
pound. The prohibition has been the
cause of much disturbance, culminat
ing in the forays of the anight riders
in Kentucky and Tenessee,

We recall the story of the megro

“No, sah,” the darky twinkled, “a

Irving Bacheller in leading the hero
of his mnew mnovel “The Hand-Made
Gentleman” through the paces of ad

a fellow companion, en route to he
coming runaways, boarded a railway
train, and, being fearful to enter
without car-fare, stoodq outside. The
train roared and creaked along, and
the platform, narrates Mr. Bacheller,
began to sway and jump and shove
and jerk and waver. Just then a
brakeman passed through, and swung
his lantern where the boys’ eyes cou:d
see the picture of a grave oOn the
car door. Its headstome bore these
words: .
