Speak so Pecple. When

Do you speak to people when
you meet them? We mean by
this, do you make it a habit tc

If ygu don’t you sheuld pequire

2~ this we make an investment
which easts us nothing but which
may bring us valuable returns. By
this act of courtesy the child be
comes attached to you; the young
man or woman eénjoys meeting you;
the old feel their age is getting the
respect due.
Did vou cver meet and pass b
person without receiving the least
recognition from him or her? Did
you ever meet one who gave you a
cheerful “good morning?’ Of
course you have. Now, which of
these did you natir:ly admire
most, and which did you havea
tendency to detest and to consider
as o haughty and selfish person?
The answer isevident, so plain that
there is no necessity of givingit
here. Now other people are by
you as you are by them, and it 18
vour duty and to your advantage
to shape your acts by the rule of
“do untoothers as you would have
them do unto you.”
Curious How He Knew It.
Some years ago &n expedition
from the University of Pennsyl
vania was sent to one of our
Southern states for the purpose of
observing a solar eclipse, says the
Ladies’ Home Journal.
The day before the event one of
the professors said to an oid colored
man belonging to the housechold
wherein the scientist was quartered:
} “Tom, if yoa will wateh your
chickens to-morrow morning you’ll
find that they’ll all go to roost at
11 o’clock.”
Tom was, of course, skeptical;
but at the appointed hour the
heavens were auarkened and the
chickens retired to roost. At this
the man’s amazement showed no
bounds, and he sought out the sei
entist.
“Perfesser,” said he, “how long
ago did you know dem chickens
would go to roost?”’ ;
“About a year ago,” said the
profesor, smiling.
“Well, if dat don’t beat 2ll,” was
the mal’s comment. *Perfesser,
a year ago dem chickens wan’t
even hatched.” e
