BLAZE IN KALAMAZOO,
Michigan Town Suffers Fire Loss of
One Million Dollzrs.
Kalamazoo, Mich.---One lite proba
bly was lost, many firemen overcome
by smoke, 700 hotel guestzs wore
driven, scantily clad, into the ley
streets, and property valued at ap
proximately $1,000,000 was aestroyed
by a fire which was only extin
gulshed after an all-night struggle by
the combined firefighting forees of
Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Grand
Raplds.
Besides a large hotel, the fire de
stroyed a dozen. small commercial
houses and the Postal Telegraph and
American Express oflice,
As it became apparent that the lo
cal fire department would be umable
to cope with the situation, ald was
summoned from Batte Creek, =2O
miles east, and Grand Replds, 6V
miles north,
Guests in the hotel, warned of their
danger, fled hastily to the street
many of them scantily clothed.
Some were compelled to remain out
in the biting cold several hours be
fore finding selter.

CIRL HAZERS PUNISHED.
Denied Certain Privileges at Fair
mount Normal School.
Charleston, W. Va.—As the result
of the inquiry of the West Virginia
state board of regents in the hazing
of Miss Mattie Taylor, a student at
the Fairmount Norgal school, one
young woman teacMler in that schooi
has been denied the privilege cf the
girls’ hall and six young women stu
dents are denied many privileges for
the remainder of the term,
Miss Taylor reported a few days
ago that she had been given an iece
cold bath, and then her body had
been painted red by the hazers, The
regents held that the hazing *“was not
of a vicious character.”
THAW STILL FIGHTING.
Slayer of White Is Resclved to Gain
His Liberty.
White Plains, N, Y.—Notwithstand
ing his repeated rebuffs by the courts,
Harry K. Thaw is still trying to get
awev from Matteawan,
His attorney has obtained an order
here directing the authcrities of the
asylum to show cause why Thaw
should not be transferred to some
other institution. The petition on
which this order was granted was
made hv Mrs, Mary C. Thaw, who al
fcges that Thaw is being mistreated
at Matteawan.
Pat Calhoun’s Trial Continued.
San Francisco.—The trial of Pat
. rick Calhoun, president of the United
Railways of this city, has been con
tinued by Judge William P. Lawlor,
until Jenuary 10 This was at the
request of the district attorney and
counsel for the defense. District At
torney Langdon explained that he de
sired to give the incoming district
attorney, Charles M. Fickert, an op
portunity to assist in selecting the
Jury.
