This issue of The News closes
wolume 7. The paper is seven
vears old, and next week will start
out on volume 8, No. 1. “We have
had the management of the paper
something over & year, and we will
leave it with our readers as to
waether there has ben any im
provement in the sheet,or not since
we took charge of it. We have re
plenished the office with new body
and job type, bought new stones,
rules, borders and many other ar
ticles essential to get out a neat
paper and do up-to-date job work.
And, we expect to continue to im
prove the paper until it is a medel
of n :atness.
We will commence printing The
News on book-paper after Jan. Ist,
and every page of it will be printed
at home for w 2 have one of the
best eylander presses now between
Macon and Brunswiek.
At the beginning of the New Year
our son’s name, S. C. Fackler, will
appear at the editorial head of The
News along with ours. He is a
thorough newspaper man, and with
the two. Sam’s at the wheel, we
hope to give our readers a better
paper then ever published here be
fore by any one.
Wo wish every reader of the Ha
slehurst News a merry, happy and
jovous Christmas. Remember we
have the poor widow and orphans
in our midst. Let’s try and make
them happy and joyous, also. Let’s
see that Santa Claus visits every
dhome in our midst this Christmas.
It will do us as much good as it
would those who are less fortunate.

there thiey were treated to free rides
over the city in carriages and au
tomobiles. A big barbecue was
given in their honor. Mayor Green
says that the people of August3l

to make their guests enjoy this oc

Below fifty feet the temperaturse
rises in the proportion of one degree
for every sixty-five feet of depth ex:
cept where currents of water carry
the heat away. The result is that at a
depth of about 4,000 feet we reach a
temperature of 98 degrees, or bloed
heat. This renders it exceedingly dif
ficult to work coal pits below that
depth. This is ¢the reason that Great
Britain®s coal commission deciéed that
mines are not workable below &0

$1.25 per month, sixth and seveiyth
grades $1.50 per month, eigh\th
and nineth grades $1.75 pér
month Fifty cents matriculatior™
fee is to be paid by each pupil, all
of which is to be paid to the city
treasurer and his receipt taken and
exhibited to the principal before
taking a place in the school. The
public term is designated as thd®
five last months of each eight
months term. Full tuition is to be
paid at all t me;, but those entitled
tothe common school fund may re
ceive their prorato share from the
County Board of Education, ag
