LESSON FOR JANUARY 14
BIRTH OF JCHN THE BAPTIST.
LESSON TEXT-—Luke 1:57-80. !
MEMORY VERSES—67-69, or 76, TT.
GOLDEN TEXT—‘“Blessed be the Lord
God of Israel, for He hath visited and
redeemed his people.”’—Luke 1:66.
Another fulfilled prophecy added to
last week’s lesson. “Hath God said,
and shall he not do it?” Heaven and
earth shall pass away, but one jot or
tittle of his promises shall never fail.
Strange that God should remember his
promise to a single individual amidst
the infinite multitude of the sons of
men! Yet he does. He marks the
fall of a sparrow. And so according to
God’s promise, the child was born.
At the proper time, the child was
dedicated to God in the temple. These
righteous parents recognized that the
child was God’s gift. All Godly parents
should. Do we? Have we presented
our children in dedication to the Lord
in the church? The first place these
parents took their child was to church.
Is this true of us? :
The naming of the child is interest
ing. John means, “gracious gift of
God.” Zacharias thought of God in
naming the child. What did you think
of when you named your child? Did
you give it a Christian name, or call
ead it after some heathen, godless nov
elist? Does the name stand for any
‘thing? Is it an inspiration to the child?
Does it express your hope and faith
in God?
There are times when, in order to
please God, we must differ with our
friends. So it happened in the naming
of John. Out of respect for Zacharias,
and because of his advanced age, and
knowing that he had no other child.
his friends proposed naming the child
after him, probably to perpetuate, the
family name. But already God had
announcéd the name. The angel said
that the child’s name should be John.
These godly parents stood fast by the
Word of God, irrespective of the opin
fon of even well-meaning friends.
A striking ; question was asked:
“What manner of child shall this be?”
What strange thoughts must have been
passing through the minds of those
parents at this time as they recalled
the angel's message and the predicted
future of this child! As Zazharias
looked into the unconscious face of
his child he saw the prophet of the
Most High., : :
Parents, what possibilities do you
see in your child as you look into its
face? That little life is for you to
mold. To some extend you can tell
what manner of child he is to be.
Teacher, what do you see in the child?
Just a bundle of mnerves to be kept
quiet, or the possibilities of a great
life?
Zacharias’ song is full of victorious
'and prophetic hope; it is itself a ful
fillment of a prophecy; God hath vis
ited his people. For over 2,000 years
the righteous in Israel had looked for
ward to the fulfillment of this proph
ecy.
The advent of this child brought joy,
not only to Zacharias and his wife,
but to their neighbors. -
The birth of this child brought forth
this hymn of praise to God for his
goodness, Did you ever thank God
for your children? Who gave them to
you? Children are the heritage of
the Lord. How much would you take
for them? All the wealth in the world
could not buy them. Nor are you ask
ed to sell them; but you are asked tc
think of the One who gave them tc
you. There are your children: Can
they see, when so many have beer
born blind; can they hear, when sc
many have been born deaf; can they
romp, when so many have been borr
lame; can they speak, when so many
have been born dumb! Oh ye par
ents who have sweet children on eartl
—and it may be in heaven—does not
their presence cause you to burst oui
in praise to God!
Another- thing that led to this song
of praise was thé fact that Zacharia:
was filled with the Spirit. Joy anc
gladness are always associated witl
the Spirit: “Be filled with the Spirit
speaking to yourselves in spiritua
gongs, singing and making melody i 1
your heart to the Lord.” The Spirit
filled man is the happy man. Are yot
a happy Christian? If no, why not?
¥hat a description we have in ths
song of Zacharias of the deliveranc:
which Christ brings to every soul tha
trusts him: Deliverance from Satar
from death, from gin, from the worl¢
from every enemy; a protection—an:
covering from the righteous vengednc
of God; freedom from the cons¢
quences of sin; the wonderful promis
that some day—even now in a measur
—we shall serve God with true hol
nuessing for evermore, .

PUBLIC FUNDS AID THE WORK
Gratifying Sign That the People Are
Awake to Value of Fight Against
Tuberculosis.
Compared with the expenditures for
tuberculosis work in 1910, those of the
past year are practically the same in
the aggregate, but they are almost
double those of 1909. The National
Association for-the Study and Preven
tion of Tuberculosis, in its third an
nual statement, points out, however,
what it considers more significant
than the aggregate expenditures,
namely, that the percentage of money
spent from public funds is greater in
1911 than ever before, being 66.2 per
cent of the total. In 19¢9 only b 53.6
per cent of the total expenditures
was from public funds, and in 1910
it had increased to 62.6 per cent, In
1911 over $9,600,00 of the $14,5600,000
spent was from federal, state, munici
pal or county funds. Since the chiet
work of the anti-tuberculosis associa
tions is to urge the public authorities
to provide for tuberculosis patients,
and thus to assume the responsibility
for stamping out this disease, the in
creased percentage of public money
is regarded as a very favorable sign
of progress. ;
Appropriations of over $10,000,000
for tuberculosis work in 1912 have al
ready been made by state legislatures
and municipal and county bodies. Of
this sum about $4,700,000 is from
state appropriations, and about flf
700,000 for county and municipal
purposes. In addition to these sums,
the federal government spends about
$1,000,000 every year supporting its
several special tuberculosis sanatoria.
PITIFUL SIGHT WITH ECZEMA |
“A few days after birth we noticed
an inflamed spot on our baby’s hip
which soon began spreading until
baby was completely covered even in
his eyes, ears and scalp. For eight
weeks he was bandaged from head to
foot. He could not have a stitch of
clothing on. Our regular physician
pronounced it chronic eczema. He is
a very able physician and ranks with
the best in this locality, nevertheless,
the- disease began spreading until
baby was completely covered. He
was losing flesh so rapidly that we be
came alarmed and decided to try Cuti
cura Soap and Ointment. ‘
“Not until I commenced using Cuti
cura Soap and Ointment could we tell
what he looked like, as we dared not
wash him, and { had been putting one
‘application after another on him. On
removing the scale from his head the
hair came off, and left him entirely
bald, but since we have been using
Cuticura Soap and Ointment he has
as much hair as ever. Four weeks
after we began to use the Cuticura
Soap and Ointment he was entirely
cured. I don’t believe anyone could
have eczema worse than our baby.
“Before we used the Cuticura Rem
edies we could hardly lock at him, he
was such a pitiful sight. He would
fuss ‘until I would treat him, they
semed to relieve him so much. Cuti
cura Soap and Ointment stand by
themselves and the result they quick
ly and surely bring is their own rec
ommendation.” (Signed) - Mrs. T. B.
Rosser, Mill Hall, Pa., Feb. 20, 1911.
Although Cuticura Soap and Oint
ment are sold by druggists and deal
ers everywhere, a sample of each,
with 32-page book, will be mailed free

You Look Prematurely Old
HAVE YOU SUSPECTED YOUR KIDNEYS?
There are two ways to tell whether you
have weak kidneys.
The first is thro:x:h the pains in the back
and other outward signs. The second is
by examination of the kidney secretions.
That is why physicians make such a
careful examination when you eppl¥ for
insurance, and if there is any sign of kid
nei_trouble_you are sure'liy rejected.
. Kidney disease is so dangerous that it
is a bad mistake to overlook or neglect it,
and if pain in the back, recurring head
aches, or a fretful, nervous, tired condition
makes you msf)ect some kidnegll trouble,
take the trouble to watch the ki e{l secre
tions. Look for amy of the following
signs:
More or less than three and one half
pints passed daily.
Too dark or too pale a color.
Passages too frequent, profuse, or much
reduced, or scnldlnf ana painful.
Sandy, lrltt{ or cloudy settlings.|
Fat or oily-looking layer which gathers
on the surface wheh allowed to stand,
or a jelly-like thickening.
Staining of the linen or bad odor.
Temgqrary changes may occur for a time
from things eaten, but if the changed ap
pearance continues, your kidneys are out
of order and need help. Neglect may prove
serious.

late the kidney secretions, stimulate and

“Why should I?” returned Mec-
