~ Givic Awakening,
A tide ¢f Civic entuhusiasm has
been sweeping over the country
for ten years and even longer,
since organized work amoung the
women wes begun along Givic lines.
What is the significagce of all
our Cicic league? The livest ses
sioa and the last state convention of
woman’s federated Clubs w s the
evening given to Civics; and an
electric current of enthusiasm swept
thru the audience. as it listened to
the wonderful reports of achieve
ments by bands of women, filled
with big purpose and with energy
that undertakes anything and fails
at nothing. :
The Civic movement is g great
one; one of the best; so women
have taken it up and ars carrying out
all kinds of Civic reforms: We see
and hear of encouraging signs every
where, of improvements along many
lines. due to efforts of the Civic
Leagues. Women are at home 1n
this work. Her enthusicasm for
beauty, for cleamliness, for- econ
omy, make thesubject of Civics
one that is peculiarly her own.
The women of Hazlehurst are
awake to advavcement, and have
realized the need, the pressing need
of earnest, organized effort to make
of this town what it should, and
what it conld be. From this reali
zation grew the Woman’s Civic
Wire
League of iJazlehurst, cigadized
but a few short months They have
not thus far been able to get hold of:
a handle for work: it has been bng=
ried in the mud; and amid many
conflicting circumstances, they have:
had to dig slowly to find it, when
that band of some of Hazlehurst's
most ernest hearted women take
hold, rest assured something will
be accomplished in ,\‘ariou_s ways
regardless of the whisperings of,
doubtful voters.
But, while Civic organizations do
good wherever organized, they
should not be expected to do what
the prosperity owners and coucil
should do for themselves. Why
should the Civie League, organized
buta few months, with not many.
active members and a small bank
account, be expected to turn this
lold town upside down in one general
"house cleaning; and have a new
town with proper drainage, with
clean streets, new sidewalks in front.
of business places, and new dump
ing grounds, other than the streets
emerging from the debris.
‘Give them a chance on a clear
day; give them your sympathy,
your co-operation, aad wait for re
suits,
Let the Town Council and the
Civic League join forces and push
the work of cleaning the town be
fore sickness and the mosquito
come t» stay. The Civic League
will resume work, after all the weeks
of inclemest Weather, by having
100 trees placed in the town: 25
will be placed in rhe schoo! ground
the others, where- most needed.
On account of small funds work
must be limited.
| Now let the word go forth that
the Civic League is not dead, not
even sleeping: and they stand for
Civic rightousness, order, beauty
and health. ' :f‘
