The cheif claim for a direct tax is

Sparta Kan Named By Taft.
John D, Walker has recent|y been
appointed by DPresidert Taft, a
member of the national assey com
mission, an honor that his many
friends in Georgia will appreciate,
The commission meets once a
vear in Philadelphia to check the
funds in the United States mint
and test the weight and fineness of
coins and is composed of leading
men of country.
Only two commissioners have
been named from Georgia since
1874, Congressman Thos. M. Nor
wood, who served in 1888, and
Congressman Thos. W. Hardwick
who served in 1910.
The appointment came to Mr.
Walker unsolicited, he having been
reccemended for a place on the
commission by Congressman Hard
wick and his friends in Washington.
