Hazlehurst Girls Gives ‘
Mugical Program.
G |
On Friday night of last wcek%
the Satilla District had a very
enjoyable entertainment at the
school house. Music and read
ings made up the greater part}
of the program. A school song
was sung by Misses Bernice
Gaskins, Francis KnoX, Elizu-i
beth MecAllister, Ada Wilma
Fisher, Bonnie Stone and Louisa‘
Simmons.
The people of the Satilla Dis
trict were surprised to hear
such songs and readings from
the Hazlehurst girls as they
thought to hear them one would
have to go to some city and pay
a big price for a seat and listen
to some professional. This goes
to prove that if we will push
our young people along with
the aid of good schools and good
teachers that we can have as
good programs at home by
home talent.
Je¥f Davis County has plenty
of rural girls and boys who are
just -as.intelligent as the girls
and boys of out towns and
cities, and thesé Hazlehurst
girls is a good example ofa
;ood schoel with efficient teach

Child, Age 6, On
Trial For Murder
LATER—This boy was
sentenced to fifteen years
in the reformatory.
~ Paintsville, Ky., 28.—
‘With several of his playmates
around his chair Carl Newton
Mahan, 61 2 years old, today
went on trial for the murder of
his 8-year-old playmate, Cecil
Van Hoose, laughing and talk
ing with his little friends and
apparently not realizing that
he is being tried on a serious
charge.
According to Carls story of
the shooting, it was a case of
the big boy who took something
away from the little boy. The
two were seeking scrap iron to
gsell and Carl had found the
prize piece of the hunt. Cecil,
Carl said, tried to take it away
rrom him, and succeeded, being
older and stronger. The young
er boy then is said to have gone
into the house, stood up ona
chair to get his father’s shotgun
off the wall, pulled the trigger
and killed his‘playmate.
