$1500.00 to SIBOO.OO per annum. A number of ccunties have‘

Sheriff Insists ,
That This Snake
Carried Umbrella
Waycross, Gal, July 14.—A1l
stories of rattlesnakes with so
many rattles and a button, and
there have been alot of them
in South Georgia this year, are
laid in the shade.
Sheriff L. C. Warren and Con
stable H. O. Freeman are telling
one about.a blac: snake with
an umbrella, .
On the Warveross Brunswick
highway, near Bladen, the two
officers were proceeding slowly
because of a rain storm. They
noticed a piece of white paper
which seemingly floated alongl
on the road, and the sheriff was
‘moved to ask, ‘‘wondec what
that isin the road?”’
Constable Freeman, driving,
brought the car almost to a dead
stop. Ahead of them, so they
say, was a hugh black snake,
one of the largest the sheriff
has ever seen. The snake was
crawling slowly along the road,
the front part of his body reared
straight upward. ~ln the
snake’s mouth was a picce of

an ordinary leter-head, the
paper being used, seemingly
to keep the rain off his king
ship’s head.
*‘And that ain’t hooie, either,
the sheriff says. ‘‘l’ve never
seen it before, and never heard
of such a thing before, and it
probably never will happen
again, but that doesn’t discredit
the fact' that what we saw was
a snake with an umbrella.”
