In a city, those who have anything

race for the prize for Hie greatest
success in building up the town, and
making it tue gem ot South-East

direction will not receive unlriendly
criticism.
—Blackshear was a lively locking
town on Saturday last. Horses,
buggies, wagons and carts were
found every whe^e, and the faces
the farmers wore tin expression of
satislaction with their lot. Tiie
merchants, too. were smiling, arid
business was brisk. And all in spite
of the weather, which was gloomy
and raw.

In one ot the suburbs ol a great
city lived an estimable man, who
had one son, an incorrigible youth.
While the father was debating in
his mind one day what calling Ise
should apprentice the lad to, the
latter committed some overt act for
which he was locked up in a room
utterly bare of furniture, the father
having first placed therein a Bible,
a dollar and an apple. The old man
determined that if on going to release
his son he should find him read ng
the Bible, he would make a clergy
man of him ; if he found him admir
ing the money he would set him up
tts a banker; and it eating the apple
he should he a farmer. When the
time came for determining the boy’s
late, the old man lotin.l him sitting
on the Bible, with the dollar in his
pocket, and masticating the last bit"
"1 the apple. So he made a politi- !
cian of him.
