A Nashville dispatch says: Governor

Anderson county, in answer to telegrams
from Superintendent of Prisons Wade,
stating that the guards bad been over
powered, and they and the convicts
engaged in building a Blockade forcibly
abipped to Knoxville by an armed mob
of 300 men. 'Ihe governor was j ined
at Chattanooga by the Lookout Mountain

special train, furnished by the Kant Jen

proceeded to Brlccville, picking
up the Knoxville Hides at Knoxville.

Buchanan will go among the rioters per

the convicts to resume work.
TUK CAUSE OF THK THOU II ftE.
The Brieeville mine is only about four
miles from Coal Creek, a branch prison, hifrc
and haa been worked by free lalror
tofore. The miners struck some
time back, and, showing no dispo
sition to come to terms, the Knoxville
Iron Company made a contract with the
sublessees of the male prison at Nashville
to mine coal for them at so much per ton.
Forty men weie sent to Brieeville from
Nashville, July 4th, anti have been since
engaged iu building the stockade for the
reception of 150 more men.until Wednes
day night, when an armed mob of 800
men placod the convicts aboard a train
and aent them to Knoxville.

A Miser’s Money.
Old Uncle Bost, of No. 10 township,
Cabarrus county, North Carolina, recent
ly died and his body was buried at
Bethel. He was about 80 years old, was
a bachelor and was known to be miserly
in bis habits to a wonderful degree. His
only companions were two dogs and an
old negro woman who had been living
with him during his entire life. Curious
to say, in his will be left her nothing.
His rc-ai estate consisted of 1,800 acres of
land. His home place, containing 500
acres, he left jointly to his two nephews,
Allen and Peter Bost. The former :shis
executor. The balance was left to other
nephews in 100-acre lots each. To his
nieces he gave nothing. In old bureau
drawers, old cupboard, in pitcher, jars,
in old clothes pockets, in old stockings
and in cracks in his miserable hovel
were found $10,000 in gold, besides a
large quantity of gold dust and bullion.
He had on hand only a few hundred dol
lars in paper money, and no notes and
mort gages of any consequence. In the
scare h a package from a Charlotte bank
was found containing several hundred
dollars that had never been opened at all.
This was received by him in 1880. Last
spring he made bis tax returns and gave
in as money on hand $4,000. Perhaps
he did not know how much he had stuck
about in different places. He had corn
and hay that had been stacked for
twenty-five years. He eased his con
science by leaving of his hard earnings
$1,000 to Bethel church. He made his
will only three weeks ago. There is much
talk about contesting it, for some of his
kin Lave been left without anything.

The American flag—the stars and the
glorious red, white and blue—has under
gone several changes within the past six
teen months. The admission of North
Dakota, South Dakota, Washington and
Montana recently, added four stars to the
blue field of the flag; then came Idaho,
and now the latest new state, Wyoming,
claims a star in the constellation of the
union. Ihe flags of the government are
always changed spangled on the Fourth of July,
and now the banner of forty
four stars is the standard of the union.
Here are the terms of the president's
latest order, as announced to the army:
‘‘The field or union of the national flag
in use in the army will, on and after
July 4, 1891, consist of forty-four stars in
six rows, the upper and lower rows to
have eight stars, and the second, third,

Considered Wonderful.
Mr. Henry V. Smith, of Belmont,
West Va., says: “he considers his
cure of Sorofula by S. S. S., one of
the most wonderful on record. He
had the disease of the worst type
all his life until he was 22 years of
age, and hie whole youth was em
bittered by It. Of course he had
all sorts of treatment, but nothing
benefited him permanently until
he took S. S. S. which cleansed the
poison from his system, and cured
him sound and well.”
