Dr. Frank C. Folks, .of Way cross,
was in town on professional business
Thursday afternoon.
Mr. .T. N. Lee ami his amiable
wife, of old Exeter, attended services
here last Sunday.
Mr. Walter II. Cohen, wile and
child, ot Savannah, are here visiting
relatives, Mr. T. 1). Hughes’ family.
Mr. Ilerschel V. Rogers and Mas
ter Hardee Keller took a trip last
week down on the great Okeelenokee
swamp, Ilerschel to see home folks
and Hardee to see somebody else’s
folks and to see the cowhouse.
Mr. John M. Shaw treated the
editor ol The Times to a very large
watermelon Monday. He sent it over
Irom his garden, and it will tip the
beam at about 40 pounds. Thanks.
Our base ball nine who went down
to Brunswick kNt week to play the
boys of that city are back homo again
with whole bones. And, while they
do not speak much about, the game,
they are loud in praise ol the hospi
table style in which they were enter
tained while in that city.
Rev. Mr. Carson, pastor of the
Presbyterian church, filled his regu
lar appointments Sunday morning
and evening, and preached very in
teresting sermons.
Mrs. M. C. McAlpin, wife of the
assistant cashier ol The B nckshear
Bank, and her sweet, little babe left
Saturday night on a visit to her nas
tive home in Brooklyn, N. V. They
will he gone about three months but
no doubt Mr. .McAlpin wi'l think it
nearer six months. We wish them a
pleasant trip and a sale return to the
southland.
The Johnston News, a neat little
five coiutun paper published by Mess.
Lord & Mobley, at Johnston, is on
our desk. It exhibits neat and artis
tic taste in its get up, and bids fair
to be a success. We gladly place it
upon our exchange list.
Mr. Louis Mayor, the soda-water
man, is still holding the fort, ami is
doing a good business. Don't forget
to give him a call when in search
a cold lemonade, milkshake or ice

A MEETING OF THE PATRONS.
Robt. &. Mitchell, Jr., Tendered the
Pierce County High School
A meeting ol the citizens and pa
trons ot the Tierce County High
school was held here yesterday,
(Wednesday) at the court house, lor
the purpose of securing a teacher for
the coming term. The meeting was
organized hv electing It. G. Riggins
chairman, and J. L Grady, secreta
ry. The discussion which followed
showed that Col. Uoht. G. Mitchell,
Jr., was the choice ot those present
and he was sent lor, and requested
to come before the meeting and ex
press his views in regard to the best
method of conducting a school to
make it successful. This he did to
the satisfaction of all present, and it
was unanimously
Resolved. Tliat Col. Robt. G. Mitchell, of
Jr., be requested to accept the High position
Principal of the Pierce county school
and at once prepare bis contract with the
patrons, and take steps to secure an astir
taut, and be it further
Rbsolved, That the rate of tuition be
fixed at $1.75 and #2 25 per month.
A motion was made to elect a
board ot trustees, by ballot, which
resulted in the election of J. M. Pur
dom, W. T. Hughes, It. G. Riggins,
I). H. Burney and J. L. Grady.

Notwithstanding the extremely hot
weather some of our citizens ami fel

Sullivan, one day last week. But
John doesn’t select a time when the

the pugilistic ring, as was the

settled and the performance will not
be repeated.

Having hail six cases ot diphtheria
to treat during the last week within
four miles of Blackshear, a-id it being
an inlectiotis ami contagious disease
of a very malignant nature, I warn
the town and the citizens of Black
shear ol the necessity ol putting iheit
houses and premises in a thorough
sanitary condition as there is a prob
ability ol its spreading through the
country ami town.

its advent into the vicinity of Black

of but two deaths Irom it yet, they
