exchange, arid we trust it will receive
the proper attention ami considera
tion from our readers:
A drummer—and a drummer, you
know, never lic»-to!d us yesterday
nl how a preacher tested the effects
olhard times on h.s congregation.
At the conclusion ol his sermon, he
said: “Ix-t everylx>dy in the house
who are paying their debts stand up."
Instantly every man, woman and
child, with one exception, arose to
their feel. Tha preacher seated the
crowd anil then said: “Let every
man who is not paying his debts
stand up.” The exception noted, a
care-worn, hungry looking, clothed
in his last summer suit individual,
slowly assumed a perpendicular po
sition ami leaned upon the back of
tho seat in front ol him. “Mow is it
my friend," asked the minister, “that
you are the only man in this large con
grogation who is unable to meet his
•bligntions?" "Run a newspaper,"
he meekly replied, “and my brethren
who have just stood up arc mv sub
scribers, and-.” “Let ns pray,"
exclaimed the preacher. This is a
living piclure.

The Southern Farmer.
The fanners of the S-mtli, ,ie-pite
the low price ol' wheat. ,o: and

same period, the New England ami
Middle States had increased but 22
pet cent.
From 1880 to 1800 the South gain,
ed 40 per cent, in the amount, oi ag
ricultural products, the rc-t ol the
Country gaining 9 per cent. The
receipts for farm produce were over
84 per cent, on the capital invested;
the other States in the Union receiv
ed but 12 per cent. These are the
gross receipts, and show that the
Southern farmer receives on the cap>
itil invested nearly $2 where the
Northern tanner receives $1. Then,
if the cost of living, clothing and the
longer working season are considered
it will largely increase the revenue
in favor of the Southern farmer. The
crops that can be raised iu the South
cover a much wider range than in
the North or West, and facilities for
cheap transportation are unequalled.
