Advice to Mother* on the t:»re of infant*
—The ifenithy child.
It is claimed by medical men gener
ally that the average child is born
healthy, and the mother who aims to
preside over a well regulated nursery
will put forth every effort to keep her
child In It* normal condition
There are training schools for nurse*
and for cooks, but for a young woman
• p trained to nroner motherhood Is
, onM > tll)ng yet to p . e accomplished , , In ,
?he new Century.
'fhe careful mother lieglns by being
systematic and punctual in all that Is
done for the hnhy. fihe lias a time for
everything, and sees that everything is
done «t the props:' time. Hhe 1 ms
learned tlint the important things
necessary for the lienltliful develop
ment of nny child are exercise, air,
cleanliness, correct food and sleep.
The most beneficial exercise for a
,,a,, y ,0 if I* n Rood, healthy
cry. The mere fact that nn Infant
breathe* I* not enough; the lungs must
be expanded, and this healthy cry i 41
the thing Inter iled to do It, lint n whin
Iflg, fretful , .. , cry 1h , not . a healthy , one.
It Is claimed that a baby cannot have
too much OXyjCCm, find , While . cl very
‘ voting Infant might ' not to be taken out
hi the open flir, yet the fill* . In the nur*
cry can lie changed frequently, at least
twice every day, when the child eon lie
taken from the room while the bad air
Is "blown out" through open windows.
If the temperature of the room Is low
ered too much, wrap the child up In a
lilnnkct when returned, until the right
dcsrrcc is reached.
A most Important Item in the baby's
training Is the bath, which means more
than a little sponging off once a day.
The child should he allowed to splash
In a tub of water each morning about
nn hour after feeding. The massage
of the mnseles and robbing of the skin
which a bath makes necessary bear a
large share toward making the healthy
child.
A baby whose food Is received with
absolute regularity seldom suffers
( | ’ om ln, llRestloti, If the nature of the
feeding hours should he so arranged
that the evening meal will come at 7
o’clock. Before feeding baby should
he made ready for the night, with no
wrinkles In the clothing or safety pins
to Irritate the tender flesh, and with
both hands and feet made warm. A
young Infant generally requires feed
lag twice during the night, ft!.
Milk that Is to ho used for food for
Infants should never he put In nn open
vessel In the refrigerator where meat
and vegetables of various things nre
kept, for nothing will absorb odors
more quickly than milk. « Neither
should It be kept In tin, but In covered
glass bottles or jars. The simplest way
to preserve milk for lafants is by Pas
teurization. This Is done liy submit
ting the milk to n temperature of about
155 degrees for fifteen minutes, and
then allowing It to cool rapidly. The
bottle of milk may be placed In ;t ves
sel of boiling water at tlio right tern
pernture to Pasteurise It, thus dostroy
lug ordinnry germs without giving tlio
milk a boiled taste. It Is best to pre
pare the food for an Infant In sulllcient
quantity each morning to lust through
the day.
When the baby Is old enough to bo
taken out for an airing, the wrappings
must lie carefully considered. It is
found that the majority of infntits in
their baby carriages on the streets lu
winter are too warmly wrapped up.
The child that Is so encased In fur
that It perspires from every pore is In
fair condition for nn attack of pneu
monla or nny one of the throat troubles
which attack Infancy. It Is of vital im
porta nee, however, that the feet aud
hands should he kept warm, iu which
case the child Is not likely to suffer
from coif,. Better than a fur rug un
der the child Is a hot water bottle, not
laid close up against the feet, but far
enough off to let the heat radiate from
the bottle. The small hands, encased
Iu woolen, can he tucked under the
carriage blanket In extra cold weather.
When tlio baby is taking nn airing,
the st roug wind should be avoided—
that Is, facing it. The sun or strong
light should never he allowed to slilue
Upon the baby's eyes when asleep In Its
carriage, ns much harm results from
this, often seriously If not permanently
Injuring the sight. This is an unfortu
ante mistake which is constantly being
made by the Ignorant mothers among
the poor.—New York Tribune.

Soak the hands on retiring in a strong, hot,

and anoint freely with CUTICURA, the great
skin cure and purest of emollients. Wear, during
the night, old, loose kid gloves, with the finger

red, rough, chapped hands, dry, fissured, itching;
feverish palms, with shapeless nails and painful
finger ends, this treatment is simply wonderful,
and points to a speedy cure of the most distress

never can tell the suffering I endured for three years.
I tried at least eight doctors, but my hands were worse than when I commenced
doctoring. I tried every old Granny remedy that was ever thought of without one
Cent’s worth of good and could not even get relief.
I would feel so badly mornings when I got up, to think that I had to go to worSc
and stand pain for eight or nine hours, that I often felt like giving up my job,
which was in the bottun j works of Mr. E. L. Kerns, the leading bottler of T renton,
N. J., who will vouch for the truth of my sufferings.
Before I could start to work, I would have to v/rap each finger on both hands,’
and then wear gloves, which I hated to do, for when I came to take them off, it
would take two hours and the flesh would break and bleed. Some of my friends
who had seen my hands would say, “If they had such hands they would have
them amputated”; others would say “they would never work,” and more would
turn away in disgust. But thanks to Cuticura, lie greatest of skin cures, it
ended all my sufferings.
Just to think, after doctoring three and spending dollar after dollar during ,
