RESCUE OR ARCTIC CRASS.
Mew Crop For the Southern mates If l
Suituted.
Rome. Ga., Jane l, 1901.
Hon. O. B. Steveus, Commissioner ol
Agriculture, Atlanta. Ga:
Leak Sik—I n reply to yours of a re
cent date in regard to what I know
about Rescue grass, will say:
I have sown for the past four year*
what you refer to as “Rescue grass,” ol
what we locally call it, “Arctic grass,’’
which of course is no proper name fot
it, but only given to describe one par
ticular characteristic of its habit oi
growth, and that is its extreme hardi
ness in winter.
Without Allowing positively, my opin
ion is that this grass belongs to tha
Bromus species of grass; that it is the
winter variety or this family as the
Bromus inermis is the summer variety,
liromu* inermis, under successive ex
periments made by the United State*
government in the hot and arid fat
west, has proven itself to be able to re
sist the hot, dry weather of that climate
better than any other grass, aud with
us it should prove a valuable pasture
grass in summer as welt «a a good hay
grass. It stiould be sown in spring,
however, to allow it to become well
rooted to euablo it tc resist the whiter.
After cutting off a crop of hay in
summer it should lie allowed to grow
until autumn, when it will affordabuud
ant pasture during our usually dry
mou ths. With this grass for summer
or autumn pusturo and the Rescue gras*
for winter pasture, cattle aud sheep Will
do well on very little other feed, except
duriug the mouths of January and Feb
ruary, when our lands are usually too
we t f or cattle to run upon. It would be
hard to find a better combination than
these two grasses afford for not only uu
all the year round pasture, but for val
uable and abaudant hay as well.
I have said this much about the
Bromus Inermis because it is a new
grass for the south, being a native of the
far west, and to suggest that it would
be a good schemo to have your depart
ment introduce it here, for I am quite
sure not oue farmer in a dozen know*
the value of this grass.
As for the winter Bropius, or Rescue
grass, as you are pleased to call it, tb ere
s no grass that will make bettor hay,
aud as a wiuter pasturage grass it i*
incomparably will the beet Not even rye
or barley stand tho wiuter better or
make moro growth. It should be sown
ou good laud, for poor land will not
make any good crop.
The seed bed should be well prepared,
as for any other grass, and the soed
sown about a bushel and a half to the
acre, early iu the autumn—say the first
week iu September, or as soon there
after as possible, if yen want early win
ter pasture. I should judge it might be
sown in spring, as it is safe to sow oats,
but the difference will bo that yon find
between spring aud fall sown oats. It
will not be safo to sow it lato in the
spring, as it is not fond of hot weather.
It cau bo cut early in may, when fully
green, for hay, aud then, if tho season
Is propitious, yon may harvest later in
June a light crop of soed, owing u good
deal to the strength of your laud. But
loft to seed it will bear an ubnuuant
crop, say at least 60 or more bushels per
acre.
If cut in the “dough’ ’ state, as wo some
times cat oats, it will give you a feed
equal to that of Bheaf oats.
There is no other grasB that will stand
more water. It will remain unhurt for
ten days under 10 feet of water and
seem to continue to grow. Therefore,
it is valuable for low, wot river lands.
Iu reference to this subject Mr. W. M*
Gammon of Rome *nys as follows;
"I aui neither u farmer nor an agros
tologlst and don’t pretend to know, but
it would give mo great satisfaction if
Mr. Redding was mistaken. I have 60
acres of it, am gutting and have been
for two weoks, for hay. Am selling it
in the field for |15 per ton. Off of l 1 ^
acres of good land I cut five tons of hay
cured. All I kuow is that it makes good
hay aud sells readily.”
Yours truly,
J. Lindsay Johnson.
