SECOND TO NONE IN GEORGIA,
An Institution of Which the Whole
State May Well Feel Proud.
Tuesday, Oct. 1st, the Presby

J j Presbytery of Savannah for the
Christian education of boys and
thr,,w ’’I” 11 its doors and the
initial fall term was begun.
1 he opening exercises were sim

by Jtev. « . A. ISisbett of Savan
mill, representing the Board of
... ! riiBiws, . and . Mr. 1 hornan J. , Far- ,,
rnr, Principal, the school was de
clared open and the enrollment of
pupils was begun.
It is tilt; intention of the Pres
bytery to make this school second
to none in the state as a moral,
intellectual and spiritual force.
Although under the control of
the Presbyterian Church the
school will nevertheless be entire
ly free from sectarian bias.
Generous contributions from
our own public spirited citizens
and corporations, and from men
of all denominations throughout
the Presbytery, 1ms made it possi
ble to open the school under the
most favorable auspices.
The main building is a large
two story structure. The lower
story contains the class rooms
with accommodations for two him
<1 red pupils. The upper story is
used ns a dormitory. Girls from
a distance will be hoarded here
unless their parents should elect,
otherwise, together with the teach
ert and matron.
Boys from a distance will be for
the present boarded in the Chris
tian homes of Blackshear, where
they will be under the supervis
ion of the Institute.
Present indications point to the
lact that present accommodations
will be taxed to the uttermost,
but as occasion demands, necessa
ry enlargements will be made.
The Board of Trustees has boon
especially fdrtunato in the selec
’tiou of Mr. Farrar as Principal.

Hay Making.
Hay making is fast becoming
me of the staple industries of our
county—Pierce. It is only in the
la-t. few years that this industry |
has , ' W! " experimented with and
has been found to be both succes-1
ful and profitable. Only a year
or two ago a mowing machine was j
tt <* r ***K« r »>* r’v.tcn county, a hay
press had hardly been thought of, |
a corn shredder was a curiosity,
Now mowers are to be found in
the county, hay presses, the best

on the market, are manufactured
right here in Blackshear and find
ready sale; shredders, while every
body cannot afford to buy them,
there are a few of them in the
county and they are kept busy at
this season going from place to
place doing work, and are becom
ing a useful atid popular machine
on the farm. Pierce county is
fully abreast with the newest and
most improved methods of farm
ing. More grain is being raised,
more hay is made, and the inter
est in more stock and better is on
the increase. The morality, the
schools and churches are all afc
taming to a higher standard, and
ere long the town will know no
country and the country will know
no town so closely will the inter
ests of tbe two be identified. A
visit to the school building last
Tuesday morning was convincing

Marble Statue Comes to Life.
At the Inter-State Fair In Atlanta
this year, opening on Ootober 0th, one
of the most remarkable illations of the

SCHOCL BOOKS.
Mr. Editor:
I feel like as a citizen of Pierce
t v I want to publicly endorse
-ome things done by the Board of
Education. They acted very wise
ly J n deciding to change the books,
\ change was badly 'i needed in
most all the books, think the
committee appointed was an ex
cellent one. I watched the com
mittee, and am sure that they act
ed conscientiously and intelligent
ly. While every book was not al
together according to my judg
ment, I believe Pierce county has
now one of the best set of books
of any county I know. The Board
of Education acted very wisely in
adopting the report of the com
mittee entire. The improvement
in the books adopted over the old
ones will more than compensate
for the expense, and the county is
to be congratulated on the change.

News From Sallie
Sai.lie, Ga., Oct. 1, 1901.
I wish to relate some few dots
in regard to our little town. Some
people say Sallie is a mean place
but it is certainly a mistake. It
is the country people around that
makes it mean. All the low down
mean tricks that have been done
here were done by people that had
no property here and of course
would like for the place to go
down; and in other words have no
human heart. Sallie is one of
the prettiest places for a town
that there is anywhere and has
good surroundings. It is situated
on the O. & W. R. R. 21 miles
from Offerman and 15 miles from
Nicholls, so why not she be a
town.
O. W. Walker is doing a fine
business at this place. He has
only been here a few months and
has gained many friends and cus
tomers.
F. M. Roberts is on the sick list
this week.
Mr. Abe Mincbew who buys cot
ton for The A. P. Brantley Co.,
says E. D. Johnson’s cotton is the
best he has ever bought yet in lint
and looks like short cotton.
M. C. Johnson of Baxley is
down this week on business.
John Boatright’s wife has been
down sick about eight months
and is not expected to live, The
doctors say there is no chance for
her to recover; also Mrs. Seaborn
Holton and Mrs. Ben Taylor, they
are all aged women.
Our General Agent of the O. &
W. Railroad, G. W. Smith, was
out looking over 1 i;b road this
week.
Johnson & Branch are doing a
fine business saw milling near
here.
The little babe of Mrs. D. F.
Minchew, who died some few
weeks ago, is cared for by its
grand-mother, Mrs. Dorcas John
son and is getting along fine.
R. B. Sullivan will leave here
for Green Cove Springs, Fla.,
next week, Mr. Sullivan is a
very aged gentleman.
Mr. Henry Deen is erecting a
fine store house at this place. We
are glad to have him, he has the
money and will.
We are having lots of rain here
and if it keeps on cotton will be
ruined.
Mr. T. R. Bullard is very sick

Mrs. H. A. Andrews, of Hagan,
