STEVENS, feb24-ly {Hun roe Block, Syracuse, JV W MOODY SA COLLECTOR Probably the most remarkable col lection ever taken up at a single re ligious gathering was that at the clos iDg meeting of Messrs. Moody and Sankey in Philadelphia last week Mr- Moody had announced at a previous meeting that there would be a collec tion taken up, and his hearers appear to have come prepared to respond to the evangelist's call for funds. The result of his appeal was a collection aggregating about SIOO,OOO. There was also ope snbeription of $5,000 and a gift of a valuable diamond ring, a gift to the donor, for which SI,OOO was realized, A MEMORIAL OF MARTHA WASH INGTON. In 1783 the French officers in the Continental army presented to Martha Washington a full china dinner ser vice, which they had made especially for her in France. Of this set there are now two pieces in existence, a plate and saucer, which were at Ar lington House until the lata war, when they were removed to the Smithso nian Institute, and thence to the Pat ent Office in Washington, where they now remain, being thought too valu able too be given to any private indi vidual. 11. H. Macy & Cos., of Four teenth street and Sixth avenue, have had made a full dinnnr set of 160 pieces, alter the designs of the remain' ing pieces. This will not be sold, but will be exhibited during the Cen tennial season, The plates and sau cers are fac similes, and the other pieces are in the probable, style of the original set, the only innova tions being medallion photo graphs of George nnd Martha Wash-, ington an the sides of the fruit-bask ets. The orginal plate has painted around the margin a chain of 15 large, elliptical links in green, joined by 15 small links of gold. Within each large link is the name of one of the States then in the Union. In the cen ter of the plate is the inonorgram “M. W.,” in black on a gold ground, sur rounded by a delicate green border, from which raditates a star of gold rays, its points reaching to the inside rim of the plate. On the star beneath the monogram, is a pink ribbon bear, ing the motto from Virgil. “ Decus et tutamem abrilo. The edge of the plate is gold, and around the chain of States is a delicately colored band forming a serpent with its tail in its mouth, and symbolizing eternity.
