THE drinks*. For years and years tho “nigger in Che wot>d pile, and the red man liavt been much in the way of the Anglo- American people. The red man has been almost exterminated, and the poor negro has been placed where his extermination is but a matter of time. His ignorance and poverty will keep him in a helpless, unthrifty condition as a race. He will not luexcuse in population in the natural way, as thi,, figures of the last decade show, and immigration from Africa is forever barred. But just at this time conies afeaiful rush from the countless mil lions of China to our Western shores, and to deluge our land and crowd out the lords of the heritage. California, that first encouraged the immigration, IB now' deadly opposed to it, and Scarcely a day passes but somo out rage is committed upon the poor Chi nese, and still they come. The Chinese question is one of the subjects which will soon supercede what once bid fair to bo the cverlast ing- nigger question. The CF'/vVr Ji >my.q: l “Tho dispatches from Ban h'r.iJ ;: relative to the anti-Chinese campaign, give no encouragement that, the cru sade against tho yellow man anu • rubber is abating. In the meantime diplomatic skill may secure for us such legislation aa vill curtail the evils-which now ex Ist. OCR SORTiiEKN FKIEXPB. We give our readers a specimen paragraph from the Inter-Ocean, the ablest as well as bitterest and most scrupulous Radical paper published in tho great West. The article is re freshing for its coolness and quite stunning in its sarcasm. It shows the high appreciation in which we are held by some of our Northern breth ren. If the writer of the article should pay us a visit we should feel compell ed in order to sustaiu our Southern reputation for hospitality to feed him upon barbecued nigger, with nigger baby pie for a side dish, to go along with his cod fish and dried herring: “nigger shooting.'’ The animal sport of the cbivalric Democracy has begun, and “nigger shooting” is again the rage. A Dorn-, ocrat is a Democrat whether he lives in Louisiana or New York, Vicksburg or Indianapolis; and, the conditions being equal, your Indianapolis sports man will shoot as many colored men, including women and children, in a day as the average W bite Leaguer of tin South. Tho difficulty is that in the North tho danger is greater. The Indianapolis sportsmen expose them selves - unnecessarily. In this they need to take a few lessons from their Southern friends- The keen-syed Lukin x of Mississippi or Louisiana rarely expose themselves to the blows ; of the 1 men they assail. This is a folly which they have learned better than to commit. It is just as easy to go quietly and in the night time to do this workns in the broad daylight, and far less dangerous. Victims can be taken ui arn and then, anil in detail, while in the daytime and on public o 'CRf.ion they nmy band together and fight. Unless a body of colored men can be brought together at a camp u .'ting, or other religious or social gathering, where they are unarmed and totally unprepared for an attack, it •• very iiidiscreet to begin an assault upon them. The Indianapolis Ku-> ' ' hd v : well. cor. lilering the 0,, , . ft nd their inexperience; but, had ii not been for their being reinforced by the police, they would probably have suffered a defeat, and Up voulil have been an unfortunate blow to (lie party in the North. .-. r r.. In 18G4, during tlie seige of Peters burg, rations were very scarce among the Confederates, and many were the adventures of the boys in search of something to eat. One day private J. W. Reid, of company D, 29th Geor gia, ventured out without a pass and soon succeeded in getting a few' ear of green corn, and was on his way back to camp with Lis mouth fairly watering Over a prospective pot of soup for himself and mess. But in making his way through the city he was “captured” by a provost guard, and having in his possession a lot of “contraband" rations, he was carried to the headquarters of his brigade' commander (Gen. Colquitt) to Lu punished. Gen. C. was absent, but his noblo wife was present, and pri vate Reed was ushered into her ; ence. Mrs. Colquitt inquired iatc '<■ matter, and was so much plea u .
