The Pennsylvania House also ex pelled Lynott, of Luzerne couuty, for receiving money on the Boom bill. Journal Clerk Skinner, also impli cated, resigned. The Deering Machinery Manufac turing Works, occupied partly by J. Steele & Cos., was burned Tuesday.— Loss $85,000. The Eagle and Phoenix Manufac turing Company, of Columbus, broke dirt on Tuesday for their cotton mill number three. It will be the largest mill in the south, containing 20.000 spindles and 650 looms, and will be completed by November. Gov. Seymour publishes a letter r-e iterating the assurance that be could not accept the nomination for Pres ident even in the improbable event of his nomination. E. J. Petroff, a member of the leg islature from Pennsylvania, was ex pelled Tuesday. He had negotiated with the lobby to get fourteen votes for the Boom bill for $7,51)0, Petroff did not receive any money, and as serts that the object was to see wheth er money was spent; but the House considered the negotiation improper. It is now estimated that nine-tenths of all the exhibits for the Centennial Exhibition are now in place in the dif ferent departments, and that the schedule will be completed in the next few days. The Corliss engiuo in Machinery Hall has been in successful operation for the past two days. New Orleans dispatches state that steps have been initiated to recover the square bequeathed to the United States for a mint, but to revert to the city should the government cease to keep a branch mint on the property. Dispatches from West Louisiana as sert that armed bands demand the resignation of parish officers at Baton Rouge. When the news came to Gen. Sherman and Sec retary Taft, both went to the Presi dent ond protested that it would not do. By advice of Gen. Sherman and secretary Taft Gen Custar went to call on the President, but was unable to gain an audience. The woolen mills, at Salem, Ore gon, were burned. Loss $150,000. Judiciary committee appointed Hut ton. Ashe and Lawrence sub commit tee on Blaine. Judge Jeremiah S. The question of amnesty to the Fe nian prisoners will come up in the House of Commons on the 13th inst. There is a fair prospect of a satis factory settlement of the differences existing between the Austrian and Hungarian ministry. The House has passed a resolution, introduced by Mr. Taxbox, of Mass., to investigate Mr. Blaine’s transac tions with the Union Pacific Railroad. The American Legation at London has been formally notified uy the Brit ish government that the forger, Wins low, will be released this morning. Strenuous efforts are being made to obtain the pardon of McKee, the proprietor of the St. Louis Globe De mocrat, and one of the convicted whisky ringsters. Mr. Banning introduced a bill on Tuesday last authorizing the Secreta ry of the Treasury to issue $10,000,- 000 in exchange for legal tender notes. Mr. Blount, of Georgia, ob jected, and the bill went over. Twenty-three thousand dollars has been paid in for the erection of a man ument in the capital square in Rich mond, in honor of the illustrious Con federate chieftain, Robert E. Lee. It is thought that $4,00j) tnorp will bq received in the course of a month- The proposed statue will certainly be erected. The New York Heralds Paris cor respondent telegraphs that Boss Tweed was momentarily seen in that gay capital a few days ago by an old New Yorker, who knew the financier’s features. Tweed, however, would hardly go to Paris in auv disguise, as there is always a crowd of New York people there, and recognition and ex tradition would not linger long. Judge Davis, of the United States supreme court, and the Atlanta Com monwealth, both express the opinion that Tilden will be the nominee of the St Louis convention for president— We concur in the opinion thatjhe will be, but don’t believe he ought to be. It is often said that a woman has no talent for business, but when a man goes home and finds that his wife has swapped off his Sunday panta loons for a patent tack hammer and a China ornament for the mantelpiece, he is compelled to wonder at the ge nius that succeeded in getting the hammer thrown in. Th Hon. Carl Scburz publishes a letter in the Public replying to criti cisms on his courso. Katie Ambler, the little girl whom Queen Victoria spoke to at the Lon* don hospital, because she thought she would got well if the Queen would on ly go and speak to her, has been dis charged from the institution perfectly cured of her wounds—serious burns. “Esnia,” a magnificent Arabian mare that cost $4,000 in gold, the property of Mr. John W. Garrett, died at that gentleman’s country seat, near Baltimore, on Saturday. She was twenty-five years old. and her numer ous progeny are noted for their great beauty, docility and fine action. A correspondent of the Chicago Tribune proposes Moody, the evan gelist, -as a presidential candidate who “would bo elected president of the United States by an overwhelming majority.” The proposition is not an absurd one.
