From Cuba.
Our colurqns, thrs-nrorning, are occupied with
the recent intelligence from Havana, brought by
the steamer Cherokee, at New Orleans. The
correspondence of the Picayune and True Della,
will no doubt be read With deep interest.—
Poor Lopez! he deserved a better fate—but
it is consoling to his numerous friends to know
that he died like a patriot and hero. What ]
will become of his compatriots ift arms, now’ i f -
the hands and at the mercy of the" Captain Gene* j
ral of Cuba, remains to bo seen: We are -fear- I
ful, however, that if what is termed a slight j
punishment in Spain, should befall tljpiu, their |
future lot will be a painful one. • ' . .
It would appear that Lopez was deceived by <
the Creoles. They seem to be unworthy of an
effort to give them freedom. Spanish tyranny
will now sink them deeper than ever, beneath
its crushing and grinding weight. Space doe» j
not allow us an expression of some redactions j 1
which we desire to present upon these tragic
matters.
Editorial matter prepared for to-day has
been excluded by our extensive Cuba intelli
gence. •

The Steamer Cherokee, arrived at New Or

is not of much interest.
We are informed that Mr. Max Maretzek has
engaged the Theatre in Charleston, and that he
and his Italian Opera troupe.will pay that city a ’
visit in the course of next month.
The U. S. mail steamship Hermann, sailed

The Treaty with Portugal.--— The claim for .
the General A rmstroiig has been submitted, in

we alluded oji Monday, to the arbitration of the
President of France.
Later from Cuba.
By the arrival of the brig Somers, Captain
Watson, from Havana, we have information from
that city to the 2d inst. General Lqpez was ese;
cuted at the Punta, one of the fortified positions
near Havana, on the Ist inst. Captain Watson
knew Lopez previous to his death, and having
seen his body a short time alter he was execut
ed, leaves no doubt that Popez died by the garoter
At the time of his execution, he was surround
ed by the American prisoners in Havana,
eighty in number. There was a strong military'
guard on the spot, and an immense concouse of
people to see the execution. All the reports
agree in stating that he-died like a soldier, and he
mentioned, just before his death, that ail his pro
ceedings were intended to elevate the people of
Cuba and give them a free government. * V
Captain Watson did not learn what was to fie
the fate of the prisoners al present in the hands
of the Government.
Among the number of a young man by the
name of Chapman, who says that he is a car
penter by trade, and has been for some time at
New Organs,'and that’he belongs to Charleston,
where his mother, a widow, resides.
The friends of Mr. Jimes Chapman-merchant
of this city, wodd naturally feel much anxiety
