Constitutionalist anb fkpnblic BY JAMES GARDNER, JR. Cottstitotunwtwt an& ftrpablir. A Revolution in Cotton-Spinning. —A model machine, recently patented by Mr. Kirk man, of Liverpool, is spoken of by "the London papers, as perhaps the most important improve ment since the days of Arkwright, and bids fair to create a perfect revolution in cotton, wool, and dax spinning. It exemplifies a new princi ple, and in a great measure supersedes the old. The machinery is very simple and inexpensive, and wilj produce more yarn, of a much better quality, in the same space, and with the same power. By this new|principle, Mr. Kirkman professes and does actually put a regular and per manent twist in rovings and yarns; both ends being held last, and neither end of the roving or yarn turning round. This, we believe, has hith to been held, even by practical men (but practi cal men once decried the steam-engine) a physi cal impossibility, to be placed in the same catego ry as perpetual motion. In worsted spinning, the importance and superiority of Mr. Kirkman's process will be more manifest than in cotton spinning, the staple being longer, requires less twist, and, with a never-failing independent ta king-up power, any quantity of work desired may be taken off with the greatest possible reg ularity. We understand our Transatlantic cousins have cast an eye on Mr. Kirkman’s specification, and that on the representations of the United States Commissioner to Mr. Abbott Lawrence, the drawings have been submitted to that gentleman, who has thought them worthy of a direct com munication to Washington on the subject. As in the ca s e of all discoveries which supersede, or radically simplify more complicated systems, the present invention may remain a long time very sparingly adopted. It certainly promises a larg er profit to the manufacturer ami a cheaper and better article to the consumer; but it is impossi ble that a change which effects so large a saving in wages should not alarm the labour market, and cause hesitation in employers. The Weather — The CRors.—The weathe continues dry and pleasant, which will add much to the cotton crop in this section. It is believed that nearly one-third more cotton will be gather ed in this country than was contemplated a short time since. The corn crop has not turned out very well, though enough is made to meet the demand. It is now selling in this place at 65 cents per bushel.— Cactvillt Statu lard , 16/A in*/. Personal Difficulties. —A painful affray took place at Gallatin on the 7th, which result- j ed in the death of Rob't. P. Peyton, brother of i Bailie Peyton. A dispute arose between deceas ed and Mr. McElwrath; the former struck the latter with a cane, when McElwrath stabbed Peyton to the heart, which killed him instantly. Both were respectable citizens and lived neigh bors to eoch other.— Chattanooga Gazette, 10/A init. GIRARDEY fit PARKER, AUCTION AND COMMISSION MERCHANTS, NO. 332 EROAD STREET, One door below the.
