The Cuban Ladies.
week, J. L. Carman, auctioneer, of this
Id at Bank’s Arcade, some three hundred
jf jewelry of every variety and kind
of them intrinsically very valuable, being
nes. elegantly set—many were valuable
leir antique and quaint form and charac
id all possessed an additional value, to
we deeply regret that sufficient publicity
t given, so that all our citizens might have
ortunity of procuring a memento thereof,
were the contributions of the ladies of
o the effort which was made _to redeem
ively isle from the bondage of the Span-
As they were all separate pieces, and em
every character of jewelry, from the coral
•* of an infant—the tiny emerald of a little
to the brilliant diamond and lustrous pearl
ull-grown Donna —and the old-tashioned
pin socket—and even the spectacles of the
—we presume that they were tributes
fferent donors. Many of the pieces were
1 with the names of the fair givers.—
was a beautiful diamond pin which
t sixty odd dollars—it was marked with
utilul name Fidelia —there were magnifi
r-rings, which the fair Velaria gave to
se of Cuban Independence, whilst innu
e Maria's , Isabella’s Inez's, &c., robbed
askets of their richest jewels, and offered
poll the altar of “ Querida Cuba.
•e was a mournful interest attached to this
It was a sorrowful and heart-sinking re
ito think how vain and profitless were
oble tokens of patriotism and generosity,
eling, too, was increased by the stealthy
rin which the sale had to be effected,
rties to whom the jewels were pledged
deem it expedient to publish the fact be
y were sold, that they were contributed
he Cuban struggle, from a fear that they
be liable to seizure by the government, as
’’ for the equipment of an enterprise made
idly by our statutes, but cousecrated by
loble principle and ieeling of an American
publican. They were therefore sold with
ch previous natice, and consequently pro
i much smaller amount than they would
•ought, had notice been given of their in
ig character and associations,
original cost of this collection must have
exceed five thousand dollars. Sold at
. the amount realized was, of course, much
ilany persons, however, knowing the his
the collection, were eager to procure some
nd memento of so noble a contribution,
i ney will be valuable curiosities, and heir-looms,
which, in future years, when Cuba has become
one of this glourious confederacy, will be regar
ded with deep interest.
There is one fact, however, of which these
jewels afford confirmation, that casts a shade over
our hopes for the redemption of Cuba, by the
hands of her sons. It is the additional proof af
forded by these facts of the superiority of the
women over the men in this, as in all other
Spanish colonies. Had the sons of Cuba a tithe
of the spirit, patriotism, and gallantry of the
daughters, the cause of her independence would
not have received the inglorious check, which
has enveloped the destiny of that iieautiful island
in a temporary cloud.—A". O. Delta, 21*1 inst.
