HALF-PAST FOUR, A. M.
DISASTROUS EIRE.
About six o'clock, last evening, a fire broke out
in Mr. C. A. l’latt's Cabinet Factory, in theiear
of his store on Broad street, which, before it was
subdued, bid lair to carry, in its ravages, the
square on which the building was situated. The
fire broke out in the third story ol' the building,
in a room used for making cotton matrasses, and
trom what we can learn, the lamp used was one
that was well guarded by a thick glass and sur
rounding wires. The workman, carrying it,
however, knocked it against a bench, which
broke the glass and lamp, and the llame igniting
with the cotton, which was scattered loosely
about, created a blaze, which caused those in the
room to seek safety in flight, in consequence of
the density of the smoke.
The alarm was soon given, and the Engine
Companies, were on the spot, blit so rapid were
the flames, the building being filled with com
bustible materials, that gre.it fears were enter- i
tamed tor its safety. Steam was soon got up on
Mr. Platt’s Engine, (whicli was capable of throw
ing two streams of water on the building.)
and up to eight o'clock, it was thought the
building would be saved with the loss of the '
root—but at the time it was supposed all was !
safe, the water in the Ellis street cistern
witli which the engine was supplied, and which I
was the main dependence lor arresting the |
fire, was exhausted, and the flames rapidly gain
ed progress.
It soon extended to the second story, and com- '
municated to the Chronicle & Sentinel office, j
an adjoining building, which had just been erect
ed. and that also was consumed, with its con
tents.
Platt’s Factory is destroyed. Ilis insurance
is about 88,000. His loss will reach about
$15,000.
The Chronicle & Sentinel office is also de- j
strnyed, with its contents—no insurance—loss
about $15,000.
HALF-PAST 3, A. M.
STILL LATER.
After we had written the above,wc had still
another alarm of Fire, which was found to pro
ceed from the back store of Mr. Hoadley’s 1
Carriage Establishment, an adjoining build- 1
in? to the Chronicle & Sentinel office. It !
was toon consumed, as our firemen were ex
hausted with previous exertions, and the supply ;
of water was limited. The Presbyterian
Lecture Room, adjoining, was in imminent dan- |
ger, as was also the Post Office, but neither was
materially injured, further than the partial re- 1
movalof a portion of their contents.
STILL LATER.
We had just returned to our office, after we :
supposed we had seen the worst of the above fire, '
when wo found our own building on fire.—
The adjoining tenement is occupied by Mr.
K. 11. Rogers, Gunsmith, and it appears, from
what wc can learn, that on Monday he burnt
some old leather to case-harden with, and
having some left, it was placed in a keg. I
The keg was put aside, and from it originated
the fire. It was only about an hour previous to
its discovery, Mr. Rogers was in his store, and
had it not been lor the fire in Mr. Platt's estab- 1
lishment, our office would have also been in ruins.
We have not time this morning to give ful 1
particulars of this fire, but will do so in our next-
There were several haii-breadth escapes, and
we are pained to learn that Mr. Bernard Roe,
first Lieutenant of the 2d Division of the Inde
pendent Fire Company, was seriously, if not fa- I
tally injuredi by the falling of the gable end of
Mr. Hoadley’s building. He was still alive
when we went to press, and under the exami
nation ol physicians. The extent of his inju
ries we could not learn. We, however, fear
tho worst.

j I got for my own uso.
I havo tried for years past every remedy for the
cure of this terrible maiady, and have spent no
j small amount of money, without having any benefit
i until, through the influence of a friend, I was in
! ducod to give your Liniment a trial: and I take
pleasure in saying, that it has, in every way, been
successful, and would urge upon every one, arid
particularly every planter and farmer, to have this
Liniment on hand. And, in conclusion, accept the
grateful thanks of, Yours, respectfully,
H. T. Lawton.
