Charles J. McDonald is precisely the man for the crisis—honest, firm and cool—sensible of what has been already lost, and of how much may' yet be saved. Resolved. That we hold the opinions ot our nominee respecting the Surrender to be en lightened and sound—his resolution to abide the solemn decision of the people of this State to take no redress for past wrongs, to be patriotic, and deferential to their sovereignty —and his views of the relative powers, as well as duties, of the State and Federal Governments to be of the old Republican School. Resolved, That we revere the Union formed by our fathers, as becomes the beneficiaries of their labors, and will, at all times, evince the sincerity of our attachment, both by a prompt and cheerful support to our several governments in the wise and impartial exercise of their just powers, and by an unceasing opposition to the assaults open or covest, which ambition, or treachery, or venality may make upon the beautifully adjusted system of checks and balances which their wisdom has devised for the better security of the Freedom, the Independence, and the Sovereignty achieved by their prowess for the people of each of these States. Resolved, That we regard the doctrine, which strips these States of every effective peaceful remedy tor any and every wrong that may be in flicted upon their citizens through the perversion or usurpation of powers, not only as Federal in fts character, and consolidating in its tendency, lut also as a libel on the memory of the heroes Ind sages of the revolution, imputing to them, as t does, a gross fraud in palming on the woild. under the semblance of free government, a cun- ! ningly devised scheme to entrap the unwary in the meshes of despotism virtualy reproaching ! them with a criminal omission of their duty to provide projier safeguards for liberty, to erect a harrier to the approaches of power, and to supply the weak and virtuous with suitable defences against the strong and vicious, virtualy reproach ing them with the stupendous folly of leaving tlie adjustment of differences between suffering minorities and unscrupulous majorities to the ar bitrament of the sword, the aggrieved to take all the hazards of rebellion, and to suffer the penal ties for treason, if more unsuccessful than them selves. when driven to a like resort to cut the knot which liound them in thralldom to Brittain. Resolved, That those patriots have not restored ns to the condition in which British oppression put them; but have left us to enjoy what their stout hearts and brawny arms acquired, and we see in the republican doctrines of State sovereign ty, resei veil and delegated powers, and constitu tional limitations, embodying the most peaceful sureties, neither an express or implied reflection on their intelligence, honesty, or patriotism. Resolved, That the principles contended for by Mr. Cobb, depriving us of all remedy for the op pressions which may lie laid on us, save such as may turn up in the fury and discord of civil war, despoiling us of long cherished constitutional guar anties and reserved rights, and throwing our in stitutions for maintenance upon the forbearance and tender mercy of their deadliest foe, are not only wicked, unsound and unwise, but if adopted by the people of the South, will prove suicidal. Risolvtd. That we highly appreciate the course pursued by the Hon. Joseph W. Jackson in the ! late Congress, and we will prove our confidence | in his firmness, integrity and faithfulness to his i trust, by the devotion of our best energies to his I re-election to the post of representative. Texas.—The Galveston News of the sth says: " There can be very little doubt that this year's crop ol Cotton will come to market earlier than usual. The dry season has caused it to mature and the bolls to open rapidly. Many of our plan ters commenced picking by the 20th of July, and some earlier.' 5 The Galveston Civilian of the Bth says:— “ Cotton picking is now pretty generally in pro gress in Texas, and the prospect for a good ave rage crop very fair.” The LaGrange Monument of the 6th says:— “ We noticed early in the summer that there was a fine prospect of a mast in some parts of Fayette county. We hear, however, that the protracted drought has blasted the young acorns. Pecans are still more susceptible of injury from this cause. As corn crops are short, a failure of a rnast would be seriously felt by our citizens.’ 5 Louisville, August 15.
