Tub Conceiit Monday Night —The concert
of the Amateur Musical Club, Monday night,
in ai iof the Cecotlaph fund, was a perfect
success, Efive that the attendance was not quite
so genernl ns on the occasion of the Tableaux
and Charades last week/ This, however, was
owing probably to the severe cold and the
threatening aspect of the weather, which pre
vented many from attending who, under more
favorable circumstances, would have been pre>
ent in honor of the occasion as well as to con
tribule their mito to aid in erecting a Cenotaph
1o ocunmemorate the heroic deeds of Augusta’s
dead. The over'eres by the band, under the
leadership of Prof. Ilett, wera exquisitely per
formed, awl applauded. The perfor- j
mances on the piano, by Professors Schreiner ;
and Weber, were gracefully and artistically ex»
ecuted, while the songs, banjo solos and jigs |
were loudly encored and vociferously applaud
*d. The performancea nf on. r-:—J -
■were in many respects superior to entertain
ments of a similar character given by regular
professional players, and we take pleasure In
congratulating them on their proficiency, hop
ing that tney will find it convenient to tepeat
their entertainment at an early day.
Mr. Hamilton and Dr. Couturier added much
to the interest of the occasion by the reci'ation
of a dialogue between Othello and lago.
•The wboleperformar.ee was as creditable to
our Amateur friends as it was satisfactory to
the audience, who evinced their approbation by
frequent rounds of applause.
Benefit rcm tub Widow of Stonewall
Jackson. —Wo take pleasure in calling atten
tion to the fact that the Queen Sisters have
very commecdably volunteered to give an en
tertainment this evenifig, at Concert Hall, the
proceeds of which will be given to the widow
of tho illustrious and deeply lamented Gen.
Stonewall Jackbou. This popular troupe of
Jhespians will be assisted by Dr. Couturier,
Mesifs Hamilton, BeDn and Verney. Tho en
tertainment will, therefore, be unusually agree
able, ami the praiseworthy object is one which
will undoubtedly attract a large attendance.—
Other Southern cities have nobly and generous
iy responded iu relieving the wants of the
•widow ol tbe peerless Jackso/, and the citizens
of Augusta will, wo feel confident, show their
appreciation of his distinguished services by
contributing liberally to this good cause
Since writing the foregoing wo have bteD
Informed that Miss Annie Blount will recite a
poem written by herself on the great Jackson.
In addit ion to this attraction, Professor Bren
ner has kindly volunteered to play the accom
paniments in the concert.
FROM the Interior—We learn from j
the Charleston Courier, of Saturday, that a ;
gentleman who is trailing In an official oapa- j
city through the Southern States, for the pur
pose of making a report on the agricultural ,
condition of the country, gave the editors 01
that journal interesting information concerning ;
affairs iu the interior of South Carolina. He :
stated that so far aH he was able to discover, 1
the plantations were being worked profitably, j
pud the planters appeared cheerful and hopeful.
It W thought the yield of cotton this year will
be fully cue-half o( that of ordinary times.—
Should it prove to be aueb, the producers will i
be satisfied, as the advance in price will offset
the decrease in quantity. The freedmen gen
erally have entered into contracts and are be
havisg remarkably well. Pilfering and rob
bing has nearly ceased. The prompt measures
taken by tue military authorities to punish some
few offenders has .had a salutary effect ou o>o
freedmen as a class. The Courier thinks tbo
country is gradually assuming an aspect of
prosperity and plenty, and indications are nu
merous that if Congress will ceage throwing
firebrands amongst the colored laborers, si
things will turn toward a satisfactory result.
SAt* C? CITT Lots,— The following sales of !
city lots 'wetV made at auction, at the Lower j
Market House, yesterday morning: Four on ,

j lAtvjfcit x L&1& w au.—i no mo Janeiro
correspondent of too New York Herald fur
nishes late and important information regard
ing the war on the River Piate, from rbich it
appears that the le ter of President Lopez, of
Paraguay, lo General Mitre, the Argentine
President, instead of containing propositions of
peace, as at first surmised, proved to be of a
very different character. Lopez charges the
allies wi.h conducting the war in a most bar
barous and'outrageous manner, and avows bis
determination, if satisfaction is not
to retaliate in the severest manner, and' to
prosecute hostilities with ferocity and renewed
vigor. To this General Mitre replies at length,
denying the principal allegations of his antag»>
onist, avowing that he has nothing to regret
or take back, Rud warning Lopez against push
ing matters to the threatened extremity. There
aro no indications of an early peace. There
was no cessation of hostile operations, the allied
armies still keeping up their march In pursuit
of the retreating Paraguayans, while the latter,
though falling back, were far from vanquished.
Disease and starvation, however, had commit
ted terrible havoc among the troops on both
aides.
Seohktary Seward is the West Indies
Wo see it stated in tie New York Here Id that
Secretary Seward was received both iu St.
Thomas and Cuba with marked courtesy and
demonstrations of resp ct by the authorities
and people. While on ihe fotfiißr i.ltud he
it <1 au interview with Santa At.na, and, it is
reported, stated to that distinguished Mexican
exile that the United States will never perroi*
the permanent establishment pf Maximilian s
ornpire in Mexico. In Havana the Secretary’s
reception was cordial, and even enthusiastic;
every possible attention being shown him and
h : s party by tha Captain General, the other of
-1 iloials and the cilisena generally. The Captain
I General entertained them at a banquet, and
placed his country residence at the Secretary's
! disposal, which latter, however, was declined.
| On bis departure Mr. Seward and hie fellow
: voyagers were accompanied to sea by a number
j of Cubans wbo had engaged small steamers
! especially for the purpose.
Leo Bail.—The Mobile, Ala , Advertiser of j
ihe 31st, is responsible for the following:
Les Bail— A poor feljow with a wood6u leg
was arrested on Tuesday, and having a ‘‘holy
horror" qf the etatiou bouse, proffered his
wooden leg as a bond for his appearance. The
offioers, moved by sympathy for the unfortunate
1 cripple, accepted the conditions, and one of
; them loaded him his cane to go borne. The
raau has cot since turned np, but the city holds
| him by the (woodon) leg to answer ihe charge.
1 He has no doubt profited by the advio? pf the
f : Texas lawyer, io giving “leg bail."
A Finger in A Bologna Sausahb —Yester
day a Hartford gentleman, albeit strong of
stomach and hearty of appetite, met his match
in eating a bologna. It was in a wholesale
bouse on Stale street, whfre a few friends had
gathered to have a glass of ale end a hit of
luncheon to themselves. The gentleman re
ferred to ate bis bologna with relish, till he
found something in his mouth which seemed
not to have been chopped up as fine as it rbould
be. Taking it out, he discovered to his horror
and dismay that it was the- —end of a man’s
