Uhamd Italian Ocnea Hkasom at tub Con ckrt Hall.—That the opera possesses, to »tr eminent degree, the power to improve, elevate and edify those who are capable of appreci ating it, even in the smallest degree, isillnstras ted well by the example of iTving. In his “ Life ami Letters,” we read that when he first attended an Italian opera he was inclined to think that the frantic bravos with which • Italians gave vent to their feelings, were a ‘‘ridiculous affectation.” “ I allowed,” he says, “ the highest musical disposition, but thought they carried their applause beyond their real approbation. In a little while, howev er, by frequenting the operas, and accustoming -myself to the novolty of their music, I began to find a fondness for it stealing on myself, and I now hurry to qn opera with as much eager ness as an Italian.” The passion thus ac quired lasted through his whole life.’ In his sixty-fourth year, he wrote from New York, with respect to the opera, “I have not missed a single performance since I have been in town » The Opera House is, in fact, the great feature in polite society.” Again, he says, “Music is to me the great sweetener of existence, and 1 never enjoyed it more abundantly than at pres ent. Words of so deep a meaning from a man who, above all, possessed a love for the beau tiful in art, show in what nigh estimantiou operatic performances should be held. No hoallhy, cultivated mind oan for a moment doubt the beneficial influence of a really firs' class rendering of tlio works of the great Italian masters, with the proper adjuncts, and given in the form as written by tbo composer. Wo are much pleased to be the means of communicating the fact of the approaching advent of the Ghiooi and Susini Opera Com pany, ut the Concert Hall, in our city. This troupe will bo under the able direction of Mux Strak. sh, the now popular Impressario, and numbers nearly forty performers, selected from the best organizitions in the Empire Statu and in Europe, (or their eminent ability and oper atic skill. We have no hesitation in saying that there lias notbecD, nor is there likely soon to be again such ft troupe here, as will shortly piay ns a visit. We are reading daily iu oui contemporaries of the g;eat success which hai attended their performances; houses packed with the beauty, intelligence, and culture, ol each city iq their progress south and westward, and in plan a the furore has been im mense. The season just terminated in New Orleans has been one of the most successful on record. Madame Angiolene Gbino, M’lle Pauline, Ca miasa and Madame Patti Strakosch are the •prima donnas. The tenors are Signora Maceif ■erri and Erzani; baritones—Signors Mara and Mancnsi, and, to complete the list, the bassos ure the eminent Susiniand Herr Graff, assisted by a powerful chorus and complete orchestra Now, we who profess to be a music lovin ' people, must give thisjconibination our heart; support, and show, by good attendance, our appreciation of the efforts of Mar to give ii> ■opera in the style and manner as rendered ii. all the large cities of America and Europe. The reportoire is very extensive. The se lection here will be il Trovatore, L’Exir ’dAtnore, Norma, Barber of Seville, Fanstarid Eraaui. The season cannot, owing to tb(>ii engagements, possibly be prolonged beyond six nigh la. Heavy on BCtlbb. —The Richmond Times is responsible for the following on Bntler : “Thr civilized world will soon be in a vory hrond grin at the refusal of the bottled Bntler to lie nficorked by Goners! Grant. Just at preseut 'however, tto people of the United States haw a glorious monopoly of the fun. We ah know how Geurral Grant, for the better pre servation of the Beast’s remains, put thei. into a bottle, and corked and wired up the mouth with great care. There is nothing nri vsnal in this process of disposing of the bodie.* ofdtad reptiles. Allot’ us have seen snakes and curious fishes preserved in this way for a very long time. “ But the Massachusetts Verres did not like being taken down from that lofty gibbet, •where the verdict of Christendom hanged him iu chains three years ago. He preferred creak ing in his irons, and swinging to and tro in tit" open nir, to being corked up in the narrow confines of a bottle. He has been in his bottle for thiee months, find his friends, the Radicals, 1 haw failed in the matter of the promised cork screw. General Grant, however, feeling some compassion for the unhappy creature* defer, mined to uncork him a few days ago. Select ing the cork-scrow of a convivial entertain ment at his residence in Washington, hegeDt iy uncorked Butler, and invited him to meet nfew friends at his residence. But the vindic tive Beast sent back a most savage refusal, swearing that no one with the blood of « Grant in his veins should uncork him, upon any pretext whatever. Whereupon, the Lieu tenant Geoeral, smiling good-humoredly, ■corked the marauder up again, and replaced him on a shelf with a large assortment of pre served snakes, toads, insects, and other con genial reptiles.” Investigation or Cotton Frauds. —The P-* tersburg Express says that the subject of cot ton frauds had quite an exciting hearing in the ■Senate during tbo morning hour of Friday. It - was introduced by Senator Davis in a resolu tion providing for the appointment of a specii 1 committee to examine into the alleged pecula tion of the Treasury agents ip the South. Si n atora Sherman and Fessenden intimated thru disinclination to touch upon the story of these frauds, apparently dreading the magnitude and infamy that will follow. Senator MeDougnll wanted pailicnlar attention paid to the secryl history of cottou operations at tbo port of Ni w Orleans, and gave peculiar significance to id suggestion by giving an ambiguous recitation ol „ the plots of two brothers, with whose case he assumed to be particularly well acquaint! d. Before he resumed his seat the Seuator took pity upon the curiosity he had excited, and gave as the heroes of bis story the brother o ! cx-Mi.jor General Butler, and the renowni d warrior himself. Butler and Mrs Gen. Grant's Spoons.— The Philadelphia Age, in commeotiog upon this rather tart missive, remarks that “ this lucky non-acceptance had one positive and eub stautial advantage attendant on it—it saved Mrs. Grant tho anxiety of watching her plate while the Imp was present, and the labor r.i counting her spoons after he had left.’’ Bishop Wilmkr.—' A New York letter, dated Friday, says: The celebrated Bishop Wilmer, of Alabama, i: in town.
