Mabtha Last Night. —The second night of
the Italian Opera proved even more success!ul
thau the first. Flo'ow’s “Martha” was
given to a crowded, elegant and highly sppre
ciativa audience. Our space will not permit
an extended criticism, or we should enter into
a more graphic account of the performance.—
It is due the artists who have undertaken so
much, that we should give them something
more than n passing notice, so, risking offense
iu another direction, we proceed. The over
ture was finely executed by the excellent or
chestra under Sig. Rosa’s direction. Mademoi
selle Canissa, as the “ Lady Enrichettn.”
proved herself mistress of the situation. At
the risk of making the young lady blu3h, we
announce the fact that she is very, very pretty,
reminding us forcibly of Piccolomini in per
son, and Kellogg in voice. Her execution of
the part assigned her was most excellent. Re
garded ns a superb piece of acting, a choice
bit of vocalization, it was more than could be
expected from one whose footprints upon the
stage are yet so fresh. We must go beyond
New York if we desire to see a “Martha”
more faithfully pictured. Herrendition ofthe
aria, familiarly known by us all as “ The
La9t Rise of Summer,” wss large, flowing,
delicious, and was responded to by the hearts
and hinds ofthe delighted audience. Madame
Patti Strakosch—what memories linger around
the name Patti. Under that name we heard
her'years agon?. When wo listen to her now.
time, which has intervened, seems nothing.—
The freshness of youth dwells yot in her voice ;
the face and form have changed, but the voice
remains fresh, rich, rivishing. As “Nancy”
she is at home. Not a shadow of the actress
is reflected upon her. Easj, grace, elegance
are hers by nature, and the stage neither robs
her of nor ad Is to her nature’s self. Not hing
snore can be said. Erraui sustained the part
of Lionel with case and care Persons who
listened to Mncaferri the evening before would
be liible to draw a comparison betwoen the
two. As well might we comparo a penny
candle to the sun. One is a tenor* grazia the
other a tcncre robusto. As Lionel, Errani left
no regrets behind. He received hearty ap
plause from the audience for each of his ef
forts. Susini, glorious Susini (funny dog,)
put the audience in good humor from the mo
ment of his appearance; ho is always good, so
we diß.' , *i 3B him without another word.

Washington, Feb. 26.
The Senate discussed the concurrent resolu
tion that no Senator or Representative from
auy seceded State shall be admitted until
Congress decides that the States are entitled to
representation.
Sherman contended that the resolntion could
confer no power not already vested in Con
gress.
Housb.— A bill was introdneed to continue
in force the act to re-establish a bureau for
freedmen’s affairs
Mr. McClung offered a resolution that it be
referred to the Committee on Reconstruction, to
inquire and ascertain whether contumacy be
already manifested-in the seceded States, and
if so, to inquire into the expediency of levy
ing contributions on the disloyal inhabitants
of such States, jp defray the extraordinary ex
penses which wonld otherwise be entailed on
the national government for keeping up a
standing army, and protecting the loyal citi
zens in their national and personal rights uns
der the Constitution. Referred without in

The Honse then discussed the joint resolu
tion proposing to amend the Constitution so a
to give Congress power to make laws to se
cure the citizens in each State, in all the priv
lieges and immunitie* of citizens in the several
States, and to all persons in the several States,

GOV. COX AND THE PRESIDENT.
■Washington, Feb. 26.
Governor Cox, of Ohio, has written a letter
detailing the conversation he bad with the
President, in which ho said his policy had
simply aimed at the earliest restoration of
peace on tho basis ol loyalty, no Congressional
policy having been adopted. When ne enter
od office ho was forced to adopt a policy of hie
own. The central idea controlled him on the
whole matter and that was proper. The sys
tem of pacification should be one to stimulate
everywhere the loyalty of the people of the
South themselves, and make it the spring of
loyal conduct and proper legislat >n, rather
than impose upon them laws and cc iditions by
direct external force.

After 18 years' exertions, commencing in a

been resorted to by unprincipled dealers since
their merit and success have bren known—such
as advertising larger bottles at leas plies, ©en

my advertisements—but I am happy to state that
out of the many who have resorted to this, none
have been successful.
MY OBJECT - .
in this notice is to make facts known to the pub

by the use of interior or spurious ones.
