Stephens.—We have been in formed, says Ihc Chronicfe A ol fcim day, upon uutborii.y which we know to be en tirely reliable, that the statements of “ Mack,” the correspondent ol the Cineiunati Commcr rinl, in regard to a recent conversation with this distinguished gentleman, are, in many re spects, wholly untrue, and that the position of Mr. Stephens on thy questions mentioned in the letter is so highly colored as to do great in justice to that gentlemen. As the letter of “ Mack ” was copied in this papier, we have felt bound to make this sl.at.e meuf in justice to Mr. Stephens. We believed at ti e time of the publication of “ Mack’s ” let ter that Hie statements it contained were highly exaggerated, it not grossly* false, and we take pleasure in being able now to make this collec tion on authority. Those who are intimate with Air. Stephens, aud particularly those who have enjoyed his confidence since the collapse ot the Confederate 'Government, need not be told that while he has conversed very freely with his friends upon the conduct of the Confederate authorities during the war, he has been careful to abstain from sucti comments as “ Mack” reports him to have ituade during his interview with him. It is generally known, and Mr. Stephens lias never attempted Lo deny the. fact, that he did not, approve of the general conduct of the Cou edcrate Government during our recent strug gle for independence, and that he utterly con demned some ot the acts <jl Mr. Davis’ admin istration. Yet that Up was uo|>a warm and true riend of the cause will hardly be asserted by my one at all familiar with his course and poai iou during that eventful period. Information Wanted.—R. M. Braden and Hamilton Keree, of Home, G.v, advertise b.r aformation of. H M. Braden, William O. veree and James If. Kcrcc. These young .ncu were enlisted in company C, 40tn regi ment, Georgia volunteers, by Capt. Hargrove, at Home, Ga., on the 41. hol March, IBC3. After the fall of Vicksburg they left, with other pa roled soldiers, for their homes in have not since been hoard from. A curious case under the test oath was r<?' gently decided l>y the Court of Claims. A man y.-is admitted to practice in the court who could ,ot. take the oath because lie had held a judi ;ial office under the Confederate Government. The court held that as he took the position to escape service in the ranks, his loyalty is un questionable. The Boston Post says: ” Locking up boys in prison cells for playing marbles on Sunday is hot calculated lo improve their morals any more than bealiug a child unmercifully is cal culated to enlighten its mhid, or starving or freezing one to puriiy its religious nature. Bnt all these experiments are tried here in our neighbood. Needs no Broof.—A man named Hayward, in a recent speech to the Radicals ot Richmond, said he “believed the negro to be better than the white man, aud was prepared to prove it.” If the white men referred to are ot his class, the assertion needs no proof. It is self-evident. .. . *. ■ pr , v.._ 2xi-tUcckli) Conotitutioiwlioi. sLaT / Wa •> * J v. .' f tFrom the VickHhiin< Times. Death of the Hon. Geo. R. Clayton. , We learn, with deep of the death of , tlie Don. George R. Clayton, of Columbus, Mis sissippi. Among the elder citizens of our State, 1 Judge Clayton wag well known, though there ) are thousands of our people who consider tbem j selves well informed in all things pertaining to Mississippi, who; perhaps, never heard his name. A native ol Georgia, he catue lo our I State when a young man, and his ability aud I knowledge oi his profession, the law, coupled , with the highest honor and the most geuial, traits of character, won for him a wide and lu crative practice. Judicial honors, soon fol lowed, and he. was chosen judge of the circuit in which he had made his home, a district which had Columbus for its centre, and embraced within its cifnipass an amount of legal ability and learning not often equalled. A Whig in principle, Judge Clayton was chosen with great unanimity as the candidate of that party lor Governor in 1343, and his com petitor, the standard bearer of the Democratic parly, was the Hon. Albeit G. Brown. The Democratic party being in the ascendant by thousands, Gov. Brown was elected, as a mat ter oi course ; but he, and all others who met Judge Clayton in the arena,Of debate, acknowl edged in him a toeinan worthy of their bright est.steel. ior some years past, Judge Clayton has been in delicate health jf but his high and manly character, his genrt ous and genial nature, his just and gentle .Mistinets, won for him friends wherever lie Vwts known. By one ofythoee strange and beautiful coinci dences ol Sht tire; which the Greek poets were wont to characterize as one of the “ Unities,” Jiidge Hlayton died in the place where he was bOrif. Alter all his wanderings, he returned with drooping pinions to the parent nest from whence, with unfledged wings, his young and ardent mind had essayed its earliest Borings. A native ol the loveliest and most picturesque tovvu of Georgia, beautiful Athens, he had made a pilgrimage, in search ol health, to the home of his young and sinless years. While there, on the night of the fifth of April, in his own chamber, with none but the cherished wile, of his bosom present, he suddenly fell dead, and his gallant and noble spirit returned to .the great God who gave it. We dare not intrude upon the privacy of hit* stricken family. Their grief is sacred--%t, as an old friend—one who knew and honored his sterling qualities oi head and heart —he who pens these lines, may be permitted to offer this In ief tribute to bis memory, and bang upon his tomb ibis bumble offering to unsullied worth. Beane, then, and a sweet repose, to the noble, generous gentleman, George U. Clayton, and, life’s fitful fever o’er, may he awake to life eternal in Ihe chambers of the blest. - • Mei.anoholy Accident.—-On Saturday morn ing, about 9 o’clock, whibsMr. Robert •lordan, the Superintendent of West Point Mills, was overlooking the manuliielure of some staves for rice barrels, his loot caught on a piece of wood, and he fell backward upon a circular saw of ten inches diameter. The saw was ele vated about three feet from the ground, being one of a pair used to cut the staves the proper length, and was in rapid motion at the time of the accdcnt. Mr. Jordan received a terrible wound, the saw striking him just below and back of the right shoulder, and cutting entirely through the muscles and ribs into l.lni cavity of the chest. Strange to say, In-.walked from Un building where Ihc accident occurred to his house, a distance of about four hundred yards. He bled profusely, and if it bad not. been for the presence of mind of his daughter, who .made a bandage of a sheet and stopped Ihe bleeding until a surgeon could come, lie would doubtless have bled to death. Dr. Anthony Belzer and Dr. Win. Iloribcek were called in, and were at lirst, of opinion that the wound was fatal, but in the afternoon the patient was evidently belter, and lie continued to improve llirinigli yesterday, although, of course, he still remains in a very critical condition. Mr. Jordan was slightly wounded by the same machine prevented him front being killed immediately on Saturday. (Vuir/rston Mercury. Mau. RoußEicr in Georgia.—The mail pouch made up at Savannah, Ga., on the even ing of the 171.1 i instant, for the Washington and New York postal, car, was lost after it left the office, and between the post office and the rail road depot. Upon being informed of the fact the post master immediately liolilied special agent A. L. Harris, and made a requisition on the whole police force of the city toward its recovery, but without success. There is every reason to be lieve that it was a casco! premeditated rohbery- II i.s known in Savannah that there is an or ganized band ol robbers and desperadoes in Georgia and South Carolina, having their head quarters in Savannah. Several eases of mail robbery have been recently reported to the special agent. Every effort, is con lined to trace the missing pouch, but with little hope of suc cess. They were uo registered letters or money order business in Llie missing pouch. The agents and postmasters have all been notified. Waxhinyton Chronicle. Sudden Death.— Young Blackstou, living near Berzelia, eante to bis death very suddenly a few days since, ft seems that his lather was killed during the war, and perhaps some of his brothers, leaving him as the only support of his mother. They were endeavoring to carry out a farm, but for want of money to buy corn, &0.., tie went out. to get work. He engaged to work where g lever power was lobe used—-a pole passing up and down. iL appears that lie slip ped, and his head was thrown hack, ami the pole came suddenly down upon his neck, breaking it, and causing death almost instantly. Stii.i. Another.—We learn from entirely re liable parties, that a gentleman residing in Glasscock comity, by the name of Chaulker, died very suddenly on Sunday last, under the following circumstances : He had been com plaining oi partial sickness for several days, aud afterwards remarked that he would die on Sunday next. Sunday came, aud he and his family aihemied church, and while on his way home he was seized with severe pains, and be fore medical assistance could be rendered, died.
