The Riot at Bikm noham, Ench.and.—The Now York Tribune, referring to the cable ac_ count of (he riot at Birurngham, England, and the failure of the dispatch to slate its origin, re marks : There is one circumstance, however, which may possibly have some connection with it. A gre it deal of ej.eiiement has been created in that neighborhood recently by two men named Scott and Murphy, who have been employed by the Protest lit Ehvtoral Uirion to circulate a tract about Ihc .’oiTessioual. Oncol them was prosecuted at Wolverhampton (twelve miles from Biiiiihigbain) on a charge of sel'ing an im moral and ohg-s-ne book, ffe was convicted, and appealed ; the decision ot Hie lower com t was reversed ; and the distribution of the objec tionable pamphlet was pushed more vigorously than ever. Mu pity lias made considerable note in Eng hiu.'l dining the past year as an anti popery spe iker of the most vehement class, his holy zeal being' especia'ly inflamed against all who had left Protestantism for the bosom of the Roman Church ; and as Birmingham is the headquarters of the priests of the oratory, most of whom were, like thiir leader, Dr. Newman, originally clergymen of the Church of England, we shall not be rash in conjecturing that Mur phy and the tract business had something to do with the riot. Peksonai..—We are pleased to iearn that the Rev. Col. G. L. Elberhardt, Bureau agent, su periutendant of negro education, and man of all work for the Radical party in Georgia, left our city a few days ago for Europe, to look after a large fortune that lias been loft his wife by the death of her father in Bath, England. The estate is valued at a million dollars, and is to be divided between Mrs. E. a brother and two sisters. We part with Mr. Eberhardt with out a pang of regret, and hope a quarter of a million wid be. sufficient hereafter to mak* him stay at home and attend to Ins own business. CONFIHMED INBANITV OF THE EMPRESS Charlotte. —The Gazette He France announces that Lite medical attendants, after having had a consultation on the state of the Empress Char lotte, have declared tliaL slip will never recover her reason, ft is also the opinion of the physi cians that her nervous system has received a shock which must soon result in her death. James Brown, aged eight years, while fisiiiug in the river at Poughkeepsie a day or two since, was dragged into the water and drowned. — When found, his hands stilt clasped thefishpole, while upon the hook was a huge eel, which had probably dragged the little lellow overboard. en-Ukcum aonotitutionmioi. More Diplomatic Complication—Why . Minister Campbell Resigned.—We are in rccejpt of some private information from Wash » ington respecting the Mexican mission that is , interesting just now, as it is announced that Mr. Campbell has resigned bis position as Min -1 ister to Mexico, and that his resignation has I Ixten accepted. Our informant says that after i the French had landed in Mexico, and Maxi , milinn had got somewhat established, an ex press company, in which a nephew of Mr. * Seward was interested, shipped to Vera Cruz a I large number of mules and wagons that found , their way into the Imperial service, and that the nephew of our Secretary of State, who was interested in the mules and wagons, joined the fortunes of Maximilian, and remained with him through his successes and reverses even to the hour ol Ills capture. Thus much as a basis for Hie difficulties bc , tween Mr. Seward and Minister Campbell.— The former gave his instructions to the Minis ter, Dot so much in the interests ol the United States as in the interests of young Seward in Mexico, which, it is declared, are involved, to some extent, in the ransom Juarez will receive tor the person of Maximilian and his German officers, ft is understood in Washington that Mr. Campbell protested against the character of tlie instructions lie had received from the Secretary of Slate as derogatory to the honor and interests of his country. Wc notice in our dispatches that Mr. Camp bell is satisfied tiie people will sustain him when they shall have read the correspondence between iiimsell and ihc Secretary. There lias been much speculation among the friends of Mr. Campbell at ids apparent tardiness in go ing to Mexico. inhere is any foundation for the rumors in Washington, and which our pri vate correspondent advises ns of, the reason why Mr. Campbell hung back cannot long be kept from Hie public. (Paris Correspondence Cincinnati Gazette. How a Duel was Avnrterl. We had, until recently, Mr. Jim Bennett, of the boat Henrietta, here. His boat stilt lies on Hie coast, waiting lor a Imycr, like tlie other yachts that bctiea*.; and they will be used to win money or lose it, at (be Cherbourg regat ta. Mr. Bennett aeeeplgd a great deal ol bos pitallty on this side ol tlie deep ; ,imi at Count one ifigtu ne stvethed the giiatce of a young Spanish nobleman, both of them being “ how-comc-you so,” whereat, tlie Spaniard, who would not light himself, persuaded two of his friends to challenge the only son of his very popular father. Carey and Lawrence Jerome persuading the Spaniards Hi it Bennett could peel an apple with a bullet. Thus do the youths of the Republic excel upon sea and tlie shore. Bennett, visited the Loudon '/'infs office and met with scanty courtesy, lie was asked to dinner by the Duchess of Salisbury, and was so set up by her united kindness uni wine that lie said to a frieud : “ Do you know why this is thus V They fear us! Yes, bigad, they trem ble before us ! I tell you, boys, I t hall plant the stars and stripes on the Tower ol Lou don !” , ' Hts is a good fellow, nevertheless, and be haved himself well. I do not know him, bnt all that l tell you is true. A clergyman was once accosted by a doctor, a professed unbeliever in religion, who asked him if he followed preaching to save souls. “ Yes.” “ if lie ever saw a soul V” “ No.” “ If he ever heard a soul ?” “No.” “ 1 f he ever tasted a soul ?” i “No.” “ If lie ever smelt a soul ?” « No.” “ If lie ever felt a soul ?" “ Yes.” 11 Weil,'’ said tlie doctor, “ there are four of the five senses against one upon I lie question whether there is a sou’,.” The clergyman then asked if he were a doctor of medicine. “ Yes.” If lie ever saw a pain V” “ No.” “ I f lie ever heard a pain ?" “ No.” “ if lie over tasted a pain ?” “ No.” “ H lie ev< r smelt a pain ?” “ No.” “ if he ever felt a pain V” “ Yes.” “Well, then,” said the clergyman, “ there are also four senses against one upon tlie question whether there is a pain ; and yet sir, you know there is a pain, and 1 know there is a soul.” Tue Two Swaynes.—Gen. Swayne arrived in this city yesterday and put up at the Battle House. It, is said that since arriving here, lie has made up Ids mind not to carry out the suggestion of Radical Swayne to appoint negroes on the city boards. That lie so decided is a subject of re gret to every loyal man in Mobile as well as to every Radical. The loyal men wish to see Rad icalism carried to its legitimate conclusion, and to let tlie military members of the common council particularly go to bed with tbe monster stripped of his mask. When that is done, we bespeak an interview, wlieu they get onto! bed next morning, with two of the gentlemen, re markable for elegant manners and tidy apparel. We shall have our special artist along to take wood or other cuts of them, that we may place them upon onr bulletin board by tlie side of the “ Grant Gun.”— Mnbi/c Tribune, Wth. Robert Foster aud his son Moses, of Chat tooga county, Ga., was arrested by a cavalry squad and carried to Rome on Sunday last. The Courier says that they formed part of a squad of men who some montlia ago pursued a supposed horse thief named Melville, and on his refusal to surrender, killed him ; that Moses Foster, who killed Melville, was tried therefor by the civil authorities and acquitted ; aud that the cause assigned for the military arrest is dial, ouly his I needs were summoned as witnesses on the trial. if Slanbery’s opinion is worth the paper on i which it is written these men will be released 1 at once. t._ m | A Paris correspondent writes : “I'tie Ameri . can troupe or riders, who have just arrived hi t Paris, filled two steam vessels. Advertising is Necessary and Proper We have a specific for a disease which is more to be dreaded than any other, and wish to inform the suffer ing of it; therefore, we do not hesitate to advertise it in order that it may become known, although we know the term “quack” will be applied to us by our so do ing. We are not afraid of the name. That there are remedies advertised -o which the name would be ap propriate, wc confess, yet we do not believe in apply ing the term to every intelligent and scientific physi cian who steps aside from “ the practice in the regular way,” nor in professionally proscribing every one “un less lie toes the regular crack.” Although a graduate of a regular Medical College, the discoverer is free-thinking and independent, and will permit no society or clique to prevent his extend* ing his field ot practice aud usefulness. A Specific has hecu in iicinaud, learned and akilliul in the treatment ol other discoaeft, have sought in vain for a specific lor Uyphilifl, and utterly failed in iu treatment. What, then, should be said of the “over 80 per cent, of graduates of regular medical ru bools—rejected for incompetence by Examining Hoards of Burgeons whom, with hundreds of others equally incompetent, are now scutte .*d over the country pursuing their fatal trade with criminal recklessness.” To protect tlie public from incompetent physicians and their extravagant charges, wo place our medicine within the reach of the afflicted. Should any purchase, and, after ajull tiial, not feel bchi fit U-d, they may write to us, describing their case I injuli, aud we wUI willingly instruct them how to u-o . t.. tern* «1y to euro tiwom. Properly u<£m!, it will. MW*, yet, some few cases may prove unusually stubborn and require n litlie varied treatment, and that such (if there should ho any) may also be cured, we offer this instruct on. mi.
