Wonderful. — Henry W. Burr, No. 49 West
14th street, while on a visit to the West, was
attacked with sovere illness from drinking im
pure water. Life was despaired of, and it was
thought that he must die. His vrife was imme
diately sent for, aod in a day or two was at his
bedside. Having herself seen the beneficial re
sults from the use of Plintation Bittbks,
she insisted upon their being administered to
him, which was done, in quantities prescribed
by the attending physician. The result was
almost as if by magic, and in one-half hour
from the time they were given, her husband
was out of danger, and by a moderate use of
them three or four times a day, he was soon
able to resume his journey to his home. This
is but one case of many thousands that we

Cotton Planters—Directions for Using
Rhodes’ Supkr-Phosphate, the old and
Longest Established Standard Manure.—
Rhodes’ Super-Phosphate can be used either
broadcast or in the hill, or with the seed in the
drill— in] no iustance is it to be plowed under
a sod, nor bedded upon.
In case of re-planting or backward growth,
Rhodes’ applied as top-dressing produces
speedy growth —it does not fire. Exposure is
of great advantage, as it absorbs ammonia from
the atmosphere, rain and dew—it being estab
lished that a large quantity of ammonia per
acre is evolved during the year from these
sources.
An application of two hundred pounds per
acre is considered sufficient for crops, bnt ex
perienced planters report three hundred pounds
per acre as repaying the outlay—high manur
ing, on fewer acres, being the most desirable
under our changed labor system.
professor Charles U. Shepard, in a recent
paper, s^.ys:
u xhe planter will never obtain the best effect
of artificial fertilizers until he incorporates them
largely with composts of stable manure, vege
table mnek and wood ashes. The Ides of trust
ing to a few hundred pounds to the acfiß of even
the best fertilizers seems next to absurd to the
Northern or European agriculturist, who thinks
nothing of enriching the same aero with ten or
fifteen tons of a sound compost.”

In the Senate, twenty-three additional acts
and seven* joint resolutions, including those
ordered to be enrolled yesterday ; also the bills
ordered to be engrossed, which received third
reading to-day and were enrolled, were duly
ratified.
Joint Committees were appointed by both
houses, in accordance with the act to regulate
tbe keeping aud disbursing of the lunds by
certain officers, to examine the books and ac
counts of the Treasurer and Comptroller Gen
eral,
Wright and Buck, of the Senate, and Crews,
Elliott, Mclntyre, Smalls and Bryant, ot the
House—two Democrats and five Republicans—
were appointed a joint committee of investiga
tion for the Third Congressional District.
Farewell speeches were made iu the House
by Speaker Moses, and in the Senate by Presi
dent pro tem. Montgomery aud Senators Rai-,
ney, Wright Caiu and Lcshe. Cain said that 1
everything looked well, and that the old Board
of Aldermen, under Judge Carpenter’s decis
ion, still took care of the Interest of Charleston.
The concurrent resolution authorizing **•»
Goveruor to appoint on luopoctor of guanos

Mandamus Quashed.—The opinion of Judge
Carpenter, which we publish thir- morning,
quashing the writ of mandamus, sued out by
Mr. Pillsbury and his Aldermen against the
Acting Mayor and Aldermen of Charleston, is
based on the purely technical ground that
mandamus Is not the proper remedy. By
agreement, the merits of the case were not
discussed, but their consideration retained for
the trial of the quo warranto between the same
parties, which commences to-day.
__ f Charleston News, 25 th.
W. A. Bishop, a colored representative,
wrote a letter to a State officer in Oconee, sum
moning him to Colombia for trial, the officer
being charged with no offense, even against
the majesty of the General Assembly. A De
mocratic Representative introduced a resolu
tion, declaring so unwarrantable an assump
tion of authority dangerous to republican in
stitutions, and referring the whole matter to
one of the standing committees for its action.
The resolution, in view of thefaets, was as mild
as milk, but it was at once laid on the table. A
Republican, especially a colored brother, can
do no wrong. —Charleston News, 25M.
The Rothschilds Dissatisfied with their
Paris House.— The Rothschilds are said to be
dissatisfied with the management of their Paris
house since the death of old Baron James.—
His two sons are men of little ability, and they
are said to have made several rninous specula
tions. Nearly all of the old employees of the
firm have been discharged since Baron James’
death. Some strange discoveries have been
made in regard to the charities of the old
Baron. He frequently subscribed for beuevo
lent purposes large sums, with the understand
ing that he should be called upon to pay only
a part of the same. He often complained of
the exorbitant sums he had to pay for clerk
hire. He took but two or three daily papers,
and the man who read the news of the day to
him every morning had to subscribe for as
many, and bring them along to Rothschild's
house. He never wore watches, rings or any
othet kind of jewelry. At the dinner table he
drank cheap wine, and he often scolded his
children lor drinking champagne and other
expensive wines. There was but one person
at whose expenses he did not grumble, and
that was his wife. When called upon by per
sons who wanted him to contribute handsome
ly to some charitable purpose, be often “ came
down" only upon being told that, if he should
not give anything, bis wife would-be applied
to. He knew that she would contribute liber
ally, and so he subscribed a handsome sum,
but usually a little less than be thought she
would have given. He was a compound of
miserly and spendthrift habits. He always
made a fuss with his shoemaker, who present
ed bis annual bill to him, but be did not even
wince when his agents asked him for twenty
thousand francs to purchase some work of art.
He was very proud of his sagacity as an art
critic and connoisseur, bnt he was cheated so
often in the purchase of pictures, statues,
medals, Ac., that one-harf the work of art in
his galleries are said to be worthless. He bad
tbe most implicit confidence in old Charles
Pillet, tbe anctiooner of works of art, but M.
Fillet, it is thought, often, abused this confi
dence and palmed worthless trumpery on the
trusting Baron. #
Snakes’ Antipathy to Fire.— There is in
Brazil a very common poisonous snake, the
Surucucu, respecting wbich the inhabitants re
inte the following facts: They say that such is
the antipathy of this reptile to fire, that when
fires are being made in the clearing away of
woods, they rush into it, scattering It With
their tails till It is extinguished, even becoming
balf roasted in the attempt; and that when an
individual is passing at night with a torch, they
pass and repass him, lashing him with their
tails till he drops it, and the Bnake is immedi
ately found closely coiled round the extinguish
ed torch. The greatest enemy of this snake is
an immense lizzard, five and six feet long. It
is said that when the snake succeeds in effect
ing a bite, the lizzard, rushing into the woods,
eats some herb, and returns to the conflict,
which almost invariably terminates in its lavar.

« The attention of the public is called to an adver
tisement headed Chartreuse Elixir or Jesuits’ Secret.
It is said to be the most effective cure for the diseases
enumerated ever discovered. It is certainly creating
a sensation in the medical world, and its discovery
will he hailed with delight by thousands who have
been hopelessly afflicted.
“It is more effective than the Hot Springs of Arkan
sas, many persons having returned from that fountain
of health unrelieved have been cured permanently by
its use. It is the discovery of one of the most emi
nent and successful-physicians on the Continent,
whose faith in its curative qualities is sufficiently at
tested by thousands. We have been assured by gen
tlemen with whom we are well acquainted, that they
have seen cures effected in the line of diseases it pro
fesses to treat that had baffled the skill of physicians
of the greatest research and highest standing. We,
therefore,'do not hesitate to endorse to the confidence
of the afflicted.”
Notice from the Louisville Journal.
“ We invite attention to Mr. Wm. G. Gray’s adver
tisement of this newl/disSbvered and most wonderful
remedy. It is called the ‘Jesuits’ Secret,’ might he
called the Secret of Perpetual Youth. Its invigorat
ing, beautifying, and life prolonging qualities are cer
tainly unsurpassed; nay, they are unequaled In this
respect, it throws the famous Hot Springs in Arkan
sas, almost magical as they are, far into the shad*. It
throws into the shade everything of the kind, Indeed,
except the Fountain of Yonth which Ponck d> Laos
sought, and from which the Elixir seems to have been
gathered. But we will not undertake to describe the
properties of this panacea. It can he tried more easily
than described or imagined.”
Notice from the New Albany (Ind .) Commercial.
“ Thr Jesuits’ Bsorrt.—We lake pleasure in call
ing the attention of our readers to the advertisement of
the above named medicine. We have heard one of the
most prominent physicians of Louisville speak in high
terms of this preparation ; therefore, we have no hesi
tancy in saying that we consider it at least as good, if
not the best medicine for Scrofula, Rheumatism, and
kindred afflictions, which has yet been offered to the
public. It is not a quack medicine, but a prescription
such astlje most learned physicians give to their pa
tents.” jan26-tuthsa*cßm
