It Is said the proprietors of the celebrated
Plantation Bitteks rent no less than nine
pews from the different denominations in New
York City for all those of their employees
who will occupy them regularly, free of charge.
This is certainly praiseworthy, and it is to be
hoped that others who employ a large number
of people will follow the example. The above
fact, accompanied with the belief that a firm
who would look so closely after the morals
and welfare of their employees, would not un
dertake to impose upon the public, has in
duced us to give the Plantation Bitters a
trial, and having found them to be all that is
represented, we cordially.recommeDd them as

Cotton Planters—Directions for Using
Rhodes’ Super-Phosphate, the old and
Longest Established Standard Manure.—
Rhodes’ Super-Phosphate can bo used cither
broadcast or fn the hill, or with the seed in the
drill— in' no instance is it to be plowed under
a sod, nor bedded upon.
In case ot re-plantlug or . backward growth,
Rhodes’ applied as top-dressing produces
speedy growth—«f does not fire. Exposure is
of great advantage, as it absorbs ammonia from
the atmosphere, rain and dew—it being estab
lished that a large quantity of ammonia per
acre is evolved during the year from these
sources. v
An application of two hundred pounds per
acre is considered sufficient for crops, but ex
perienced planters report three hundred pounds
per acre as repaying the outlay—high manur
ing, on fewer acres, being the most desirable
under onr changed labor system.
Professor Charles U. Shepard, in a recent
paper, says:
“ The planter will never obtain the beet effect
of artificial fertilizers until he Incorporates them
largely with composts of stable manure, vege
table muck and wood ashes. The idea of trust
ing to a few hundred pounds to the acre of even
the best fertilizers seems next to abanrd to the
Northern or European thinks
nothing of enriching the same ten or
fifteen tons ot a sound compost.”

LANCASTER.
The Charlotte (N. C.) Times, of the 29th, says
that on last Thursday the body of a white man 5
was found in a thicket above Elliott’s Old Mill,
about three miles from town, which, upon ex
amination, was found to be Harwell Hilton. —
The deceased was from Lancaster, S. C., and at
the time of his death was employed at the mill.
It is supposed he was killed with an axe, in the
house, and the body taken out for concealment.
The object of the fool deed was to get his mo
ney and clothes. He had about him some $52
in silver and greenbacks. The top of his head
was knocked off and several holes through his
body, made by a pistol or gnn. He was alone
at tbe time the murder was committed. At (he
time of this writing (Sunday afternoon), tbe
jury of inquest is in session. One negro boy
has been committed to jail as either principal
or accessory, and the officers of the law are in
pursuit of other negroes who have fled, proba
bly to South Carolina. This matter will be
thoroughly .sifted and the guilty wretches
brought to justice.
New Steam Fire Engine for the Eagle
Company. —The anxiety of the Eagles was al
layed yesterday by the arrival of their new en
gine on the Saragossa. As soon as she was
safely landed, a detachment of the company
took her in charge and drew her up to the
house ol the company in Meeting street, north
of John street. Mr. Bntton, the builder of the
new apparatus, accompanies it for the purpose
of correcting any mishap to the mechanism and
testing her to the satisfaction of the company.
The new machine was built at the Bntton
Works, Waterford, New York, and is No. 47
of the make, and of thiijd class. Her weight is
four thousand two hundred pounds ; she has a
balance engine with one hundred and seventy
pounds as the maximum gauge of steam, and
fifty to sixty pounds the average. Her boilers
are furnished with copper flues ; her engine is
nine inch stroke and five inch cylinder. She is
jacketed with German silver and princes’
metal. She has horizontal pumps, which are
supplied with tanks ; has two steam pressure
and one under press gauge; glass water and
try cocks ; three signal and three coach lamps.
The main signal lamp is finely burnished
metal, with stained glass tastefully inscribed
with the name of the company, date of institu
tion and incorporation. Her wheels are five
and a half and four and a half feet diameter,
and she is on eliptie springs. In all probabili
ty a formal trial of throwing power will be
made this afternoon, when it will be seen if she
will sustain her reputation for two hundred
and thirty lees, though nozzle.

Time, Money and Labor Saved.
THE AUTOMATIC CLOTHES WASHER
AND BOILER.
HIS most useful invention has been introduced
Into this city by the undersigned, who guarantees the
performance of all that is claimed for it. The cost is
comparatively trifling—BlX DOLLARS —when is
considered the amount of time, money and labor saved
by its use.
This Boiler operates upon purely philosophical prin
ciples.
It is self-acting, and dispenses entirely with labor
and the wear of clothes.
The hot suds and steam, by the action of fixe, are
driven up through tubes, poured upon the clothes,
and forced through the fabric with astonishing rapid
ity, cleansing it perfectly without any rubbing. It has
been thoroughly tested, and pronounced unequaled as
a Clothes Washer by these who have used It.
• All fabrics, from the finest laces to" the bed blanket,
can be washed perfectly and with ease, without the
aid of the rubbing-board. For Flannels it is invalua
ble, as the robbing, rolling and pressing process must
nri—rnrll r fzli i <«»
Nfailill||jip2p9mHP^c£^a r dghip, and washing
Mtty sottongjdr a terror and a dread to housewives.
The invention can be used in any boiler, and the
low price of the ar'icle places it within the reach of
every family.
The saving in the wear of clothes will very soon pay
for the outlay.
It is estimated that 200 to 300 gallons of boiled ends
pass through the clothes in thirty minutes; this being
the longest time required for cleaning a boiler full of
clothes.
