Tho language of nature and experience de
nionatrates that, -whoever would enjoy the pleas
ures of food, the beauties of landscape, the
joys of companionship, the riches of literature,
or the honors of station and renown, must pre
serve their health. The effect of foul, injurious
food entering the stomach, is to derange the di
sestive organs and produce headache, loss of
appetite, nurefresbiug sleep, low spirits, fever

that horrid disease, Dyspepsia , which assumes
thousand shapes, and points towards a mis

NEWBERRY.
The Newberry Herald says: ** The fine
Spring-like weather of the past few weeks was
rudely broken on Saturday last, when it began
to turn cold. Sunday was quite cold and
windy, and altogether just such a day as one
cares not to experience after such a delightful
spell as that of the week previous. On Mon
day morning there was a very heavy frost,
which did no little damage. Some fear that
the little fruit which escaped frost before East
er is now killed, but we incline to a different
opinion, owing to the extreme dryness. The
crop will be lamentably short however. Gar
den vegetation in low and exposed situations
suffered to some extent, while in other places
litlle-or no damage was done.
“ The streets were crowded on Monday.—
The following sales were made by the sheriff:
One small bouse and lot, one-fifth of an acre,
$305; one small house, containing one-eighth
of an acre, $900; and one good dwelling house,
with about one-half acre, $1,234. These were
the most important sales.”

CLARENDON.
The Sumter Watchman says: “We learn
that a spirited railroad meeting was held at.
Manning on Monday last, and that Mr. D. B.

corps of engineers to establish the line of the
proposed railroad from Gourdio’s to Sumter.
The people of Clarendon pledged land and
money to a considerable extent.”
SUMTER.
The Sumter Watchman, of Wednesday, says :
“ We have recently been mnch gratified by a
visit to the garden of Mr. T. J. Tnomey, of our
town. We saw vegetables there in a degree of
forwardness that reminded us of Charleston.
We are much indebted to him tor a lot of fine
cabbage plants and a bunch ot beautifnl
radishes.”
EDGEFIELD.
The Edgefield Advertiser, of Wednesday,
says: “We learn that Mr. John Hatcher and
Mr. Cullen ? Rowe, living in this district, some
few miles from Aiken, were arrested last week
by the State constable, or one of his deputies,
with the assistance 01 a posse of armed negroes,
carried to Columbia, and there lodged in jail.—
Hatcher was supposed to be implicated in the
murder of Ben Bauskett, a negro, found dead
some weeks back, not lar from Hatcher’s, and
Rowe was arrested on the charge of whipping
and otherwise maltreating a negro.”

An Ancient Battle.—Free from the smoke
of a modern engagement, a Hellenic battle
must have been a gallant sight. In purple tu
nics and burnished armor, the men stood ted,
fifteen and twentv deep, beneath a glittering
forest of spear heads. Those who were well to
do had no lack of cold about their greaves
and breast-plates, and were dandified in plumes
and sword-belts; while even the poorest citi
eens wore a helmet fashioned by the exquisite
taste of a Greek artificer. It must have been a
trial of the nerves of the bravest to 6tand biting
his* moustache, humming a bar of the p®an
which he was to sing within the next quarter
of an hour; wondering whether his widow
would marry again; hoping that the cobler
on his right might not. turn tail, or the teacher
of gymnastics on his left shove him out of the
line; dimly conscious meanwhile that his co
lonel was exhorting him in a series of well
tuned periods to bethink himself of the tomb
which covered those who died In Thermopy
lte and the trophv which stood on the beach at
Ar’temesluin. And then the signal-trumpet
sounded, and the music struck up, and the
whole army, moved forward, steadily at first,
but breaking into a run, when only a tew hun
dred yards separated tha approaching lines.
And, ns the distance between them grew short
er, and the tramp of the enemy mingled with
their own, the front rank wen had jnsttime to
try and Imagine that the countenance of the
people opposite looked like flinching, apd that
the notes of their war chant had begun to fal
ter, and the next second there would be a crash
of pikes, and a grating of bucklers, and a
clutching of beards, and those who would fain
be home again were pushed on by the mass be
hind, excited at hearing others fighting, and
with uo steel at his owp ihroat; and, after five
minutes of thrusting and gflootlgg, and fierce
straining of foot and knee and shoulder, the
less determined or the worst disciplined of the
two hosts would learn, by more cruel expe
rience, what the old learn, that life, as well as
honor, }s for those who retain their self-respect
and their shields.
Jail Breaking—Five Prisoners EsgaPP®-
—All prisoners confined in the jail, except
Anderson, a white naan, charged with murder
ing his wife, escaped yesterday morning about
4 o’clock. The number was five—all negroes
—whose oflenses were mostly burglary. All
had been locked securely iu the inner chamber
the evening previous, and the massive doors
bolted. By some means the prisoners had se
cured a file. With this they managed to saw
and break away the topmost bolt, and then to
lift ao iron door, weighing some two hundred
pounds, from the hinges. Then by filing and
afterwards pounding with this door a hole was
made through the floor large enough to admit
of the passage of a man. All crowded through
and then ascended somehow within the narrow
space between the brick and iron walls, to a
skylight, through which they ascended to the
rpol, and thence descended by means of the
lightning rod. Anderson, frftp gives this ac
count of the mode of escape, says he beard two
fall to the ground like bales of cotton. When
asked why he did not go with them, he replied
ha did not want to—he had done nothing.—
The night was quite dark.
