a fall and pleasant account of an entertainment
given at Greenwood on Tuesday last tor the
benefit of the Presbyterian and Methodist
Churches of that place. Charades aud tableaux
formed part of the attractive features of the
occasion.
Union.—An Agricultural Society was formed
in Union county on the 12(h instant, with the
following officers : A. W. Thompson, Presi
dent ; R. J. Gage. Secretary ; Thomas McNally,
Treasurer ; S. M. Kiee, R. J. Bedsill, W. J.

Laurens. —The Laurensville Herald an
nounces the sndden death, from apoplexy, of
Mr. Win. Hunter, at his plantation in that dis
trict, on the 10th instant.
A serious affair occurred on the plantation
of Mr. Boyd (in the Fork), in Laurens District,
on Thnrsday, the Bth instant. In an alterca
tion between two young negro women, Emma
and Lon ; Emma used a knife, and stabbed her
antagonist near the heart, causing death in
about ten minutes. Emma is in jail at this
place.
Orangeburg.—Mr. Ephraim Graves came
Dear losing his ham and outbuildings a few
days since by fire. The barn caught from
burning woods, and it was only by energy and
presence of mind that, the flames were sub
dued. Several farmers in that section have
lost their fencing from the same fire.
Mr. Phil. Hutto, of the Fork, has a cow that
has given birth to five calves in three years.—
The first year she produced twins, the second
year a single calf, and the third year, about
three months since, twins again. All are living
and fine looking stock. Can auy other cow in
any other country beat this?
Chesterfield.—The Cbernw Democrat no
tices an ingenious attempt to swindle the liquor
dealers of that'place. Some sharper offered a
barrel for sale from the bung of which brandy
of good quality was (Jrawn, while from the
gimlet hole at either end the clearest and mo6t
innocent well water was obtained. On offer
ing his liquor for sale, he drew from the bung
a small sample, which pleased the purchaser at
§3 25 per gallon ; but when be attempted to
gauge it to ascertain the outage, the rod would
only go straight down, and not entirely down
at that. This was strange, and excited suspi
cion, and upon examination it was discovered
thato tube was fixed in the barrel just under
the bung which would not hold a quart. This
was filled with the real simon pure article,
while the barrel itseif contained the very, com
mon and unpopular beverage which may be had
for nothitfg at any branch.

Diabolism.
Carrollton, Ga., April 13th, 1869.
Mr. Editor : I have not the necessary time
this morning to write yon- a letter of much
length. But as an occurrence took place iu
this county on Digbt before last, of Buch uu
paraliclnd atrocity aud meauness, 1 feel it to be
my duty to inform the public that more than
fiends are abroad iu the laud. This occurrence
took place at the residence of Mr. John Bon
ner, a well knowu Christian gentleman. At the
time above mentioned, tour or five of his horses
throats were cut trout ear to ear, which was all
t.be stock of the horse kind lie had. One, I
understand, was lound dead in the lot yester
day morning; the rest are not dead but no
hopes are entertained of their living. 1 am
uuable to say whether or not history or the
memory ot mau records an instance, in parallel
with this, for more than demoniac brutality aud
meanness. I think it would bo unjust and
sacrilegious in the highest degree, to say that
one ot God's creatures did the act. He certain
ly cannot be the author of more than a demon.
It is perhaps imprudent to mention more than
this unfortunate citizen had his giu-house aud
barn burned some two months ago, aud during
the post week au old frosty headed negro by
the name of Tom, was convicted aud sentenced
to four years’ imprisonment in the State Peni
tentiary. Anew trial was refused by that Just
and upright Judge, John S. Bigby. This con
.vict has three or four sons at large who were
implicated in the burning of the gin-house aud
baru; and it has been predicted all the
while by Mr. Bonner that if they were not
confined, where a just sentence would place
them, they would entirely ruin him. He knows
their disposition. The county at large is at
fault in not aiding in seme way to protect this
worthy citizen. Penack.
A Romance of True Love — Tbe death of
a Miss Jackson, of this city, on Thursday of
Inst week, was followed by that of Mr. W. L.
Hudgens the Saturday following. The former
peacefully breathed her last alter a long and
painful illness ; the latter in a paroxysm of
grief burst a blood vessel nnd died almost in
stantly. The deceased were betrothed, and
the consummation of their dreams of love had
been deferred from time to time, until, finally,
Miss Jackson was prostrated by sickness.
Unwilling eveu then to he debarred her
presence, Mr. H. was admitted to the sick
room, where none were more attentive to the
every want of the sufferer than himself, so far
as the delicacy of bis position would permit.
A sister of Miss Jackson was, for days and
nights, tbe sharer of his watchfulness. Her
more feeble nature, however, sunk under the
burden of fatigue and sleepless apprehensiou,
which she vainly struggled to sustain, and at
last Mr. Hudgens was left alone, with barely
the assistance of a servant. The object of his
solicitude and devotion, day by day, became
more feeble. He scarcely left her bedside.
Sleep became a stranger to his eyes, and even
food was put away by him. But even such
devotion could not turn the penetrating barb
of death, and finally the eyes of the sufferer
upon the tearful face ever above her, and her
hand grew cold and rigid in death while yet in
the warm clasp of bis to whom it was so short
ly to be given in life and love. This was on
Thursday.
On Friday, the remains of Miss Jackson
were followed to the grave. He who had been
ever present at her bed was by her bier. His
heart went down into the grave with the
sleeper.
The day following the bnrial, the fatigue to
which Mr. Hudgens had subjected himself be
gan to overcome him. He sank prostrated
upon his bed, and giving away to the poignancy
of his feelings, burst a blood vessel, and in less
than five minutes, bis heart bad ceased to
suffer, for it was cold forever. The next day
he, too, was followed to the tomb aud placed
by the side of his betrothed.— St. Louis T.mes.
Encouraging to Fiddlers.— The late M.
Stroplong commenced. life as a violin player,
and yet before the close of his career he had
been made a peer by King Louis Pbillipe, and
President of the Senate by the Emperor Napo
leon. It is not to his credit that he never re
ferred to his fiddling days after he became a
peer. Many a man who began hts life ns a peer
has beeu glad to end it as a fiddler. Louis
Pbillipe started as a priuce and rose to be a
school teacher. He afterwards turned out bad
ly, got into bad company, turned King, and
finally Sunk into oblivion as Mr. Smith. Thos.
Jefferson fiddled as a young man, and is said to
have cut ont his rival by his performances on
the violin. The world, however, draws this
distinction between Troplong aud Jefferson:
one played for money, and hence was only a
fiddler; the other played as an amateur for the
amusement of hitpself and friends; he is, there
fore, a violinist, which sounds better, and is
never applied by the world to the wretch who
saws for gold.
Joseph’s Well, so named after the Caliph
Toosef, is au ancient Egyptian work, tbe date
Os Its construction being unknown. It was
probably constructed for the purpose of sup
plying water to the troops; the same use to
which it is now put. It is 260 feet deep, and
20 feet square, and for most of the way is cut
in the solid rock. The water is raised from it
by oxen. A winding passage leads to the bot
tom of it; we descended a portion of the way,
and looking through a window like opening in
the rock-carbiog could see the water at the bot
tom, by the light let in at the top. From one
part of the citadel, is a magnificent view of
Cairo, with the green and fertile valley of the
Nile, stretching away to the North and South;
its six pyramids standing like watch towers on
its border; while beyond all, the red sand soil
of the Libyan desert seem to hold the horizon
in their warm embrace and make a union of
the earth and sky.

PURIFY YOUR BLOOD
HURLEY’S SARSAPARILLA.
(_) F ALL the remedies that have been dlscover
ed during the present age for the “ thousand ills that
flesh is heir to," none equal this wonderful prepara
tion. Only 15 years have elapsed since the discover
er (who spent a decade in studying, experimenting
and perfecting It,) first introduced it to the public,
a*d it is already recognized by the most eminent phy
sicians in all parts of the country to be the most sur
prising and effective remedy for certain diseases of
which they have knowledge.
All other Compounds or Syrups of this Root have
hitherto failed to command the sanction of the Facul

contain noxious ingredients, which neutralize the
good-effects of the Sarsaparilla, and oftentimes injure
the hea th of the patient It is not so with Hurley’s
preparation.

WORTHY OF ATTEJfTIOIf,
To Dr. Thoi. A. Hurley:
1 hereby certify' that during last year I was attack
ed with the Ague whilst in Vicksburg, Miss., and
used several popular medicines with but temporary
relief. On reaching home the and sense returned .n a
worse type, if possible, when my medical attendant
ordered Quinine in large doses —frequently as high as
60 grains per day, and which must have cost me near
ly 1100. I consulted Dr. Smith, of Louisville, and
found he prescribed quinine and arsenic combined,
which I refused to lake, preferring to let the disease
take its course. I was almost hloodlese, extremely
exhausted, and pronounced with eu'arged Liver ana
Sp oen. About this time the advertisement of Hur
ley’s Ague Tonic appeared m a city paper, and I de
termined to give it atrial. 1 did so, and have no rea
son to regret it. Cue bottle restored me
and since that time I have seen nearly a hundred
cases.iu which it acted with equally happy results,
and woum certainly recommend it as preierablo to
any other tonic before the public.

ly adopted into use, in
- V • • jSfl every country and among
I A c«bi all classes, as this mild
but efficient purgative
t 4 w Rill. The obvious rea-
son is, that it is a more re
gx liable aud l'ar more offer
tual remedy than any
tried it, know that it cured them; those who have
not, know that it cures their neighbors and friends,
and all know that what it docs once it does always
.—that it never fails through any fault or neglect of
its composition. We have, and can show, thou
sands upon thousands of certificates of remarka
ble enres of the following complaints, hut such
cures are known in every neighborhood, and why
should we publish them ? Adapted to all ages and
conditions in all climates; containing neither calo
mel or any deleterious drug, they may be taken
with eaffety by anybody. Their sugar coating pre
serves them ever fresh and makes them pleasant to
take, while being purely vegetable no harm can
arise from their use in any quantity.
They operate by their powerful influence on the
internal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate it
into healthy action remove the obstructions of the
stomach, bowels, liver, and other organs of the
body, restoring their irregular action to health, and
by correcting, wherever they exist, such derange
ments as are the first origin of disease.
Minute directions are given in the wrapper on
the box, for the following complaints, which these
Pills rapidly cure
For Bynpepiia or Indigestion, Llstless
neH, Languor and lorn of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to- stimulate the stom
ach and restore its healthy tone aud action.
For Liver Complaint and its various symp
toms, Bilious Headache, Sick Headache,
Jaundice or Creen Sickness, Bilious
Colic and Bilious Fevers, they should be ju
diciously taken for each case, to correct the diseased
action or remove the obstructions which cause it.
For Dysentery or Diarrhoea, but one mild
dose is generally required.
For Dheumatiem, Gout, Gravel, Palpi
tation of the Heart, Pain in the Side,
Back and Loins, they should be continuously
taken, as required, to change the diseased action of
the system. With such change those complaints
disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsicnl Swelling, they
shouldbc taken in large and frequent doses to pro
duce the effect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression a large < lose should be taken
as it produces the desired effect by sympathy.
Asa Vinner Pill, take one or two Pills to pro
mote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels Into healthy action, restores the appetite,
and invigorates the system. Hence it is often ad
vantageous where no serious derangement exists.
One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a dose
of these Pills makes him feel decidedly better, from
their cleansing and renovating effect on the diges
tive apparatus. There are numerous cases where
a purgative is required, which we cannot enumer
ate here, but they suggest themselves to everybody,
and where the virtues of this Pill are known, the
public no longer doubt what to employ.
Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral,

such as Conghs, Colds, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma,

Probably never before in Itao whole history of
medicine, nas anything wou so widely and so deeply
upon the confidence of mankind, as this excellent
remedv forpiilmonary complaints. Through along
scries‘of years, and among most of the races of
men it has risen higher and higher in their estima
tion, as it has become better known. Its uniform
character and power to cure the various affections'
of the lungs ana throat, have made it known as a re
liable protector against them. While adapted to
milder forms of disease and to young children, it is
at the same time the most effectual remedy that can
be given for iacipient consumption, and the dan
gerous affections of the throat and lungs. Asa pro
vision against sudden attacks of Croup. It should
be kept on hand in every family, and indeed as all
are sometimes snbjeol to colds and coughs, all
should be provided with this autidote for them.
Although settled Consumption is thought m
curable, still great numbers of cases where the dis
ease seemed settled, have been completely cured,
and the patient restored to sound health by the
Cherry/ Pectoral. So complete is Its mastery
over tie disorders of the Lungs and Throat, that
the most obstinate of them yield to it. When noth
inir else could reach under the Cherry iree
toral they subside and disappear.
Singers and Public Speakers find great pro

CU Bro«eftftt« is generallv cured by taking tha
