Hawaii's Magnolia Balm. This article is
the True Secret of Beauty. It. is what
Fashionable Ladies, Actresses, aud Opera

It removes all unsightly Blotches, Red

There is no mistake about it, Planta
tion Bitteks will ward off Fever and
Ague aud till kindred diseases, if used in
time. No family need suffer from this dis
tressing complaint if they will keep Plan
tation Bitters in the house, and use it ac
cording to directions. The most import
ant Ingredient of this medicine is Calisaya
or Peruvian Bark, which is known to be
the finest and purest tonic in the vegetable
kingdom. The extract of this Bark is the
active principle of all the good Fever and
Ague Medicines prescribed by intelligent
doctors. Calisaya Bark is used extensive
ly in the manufacture of Plantation Bit
ters, as well as quinine, and we dare say
they owe their popularity mostly to that
fact. We can recommend them.

A STUBBORN FACT.
There is scarcely any disease in which
purgative medicines are not more or less
required, and much suffering might be pre
vented were they more generally used. No
person can feel well while a costive habit
of body prevails; besides, it soon gener
ates serious diseases which might liave 'been
avoided by a timely use of Cathartic Medi
cines. For this purpose DR. TUTTS’ VE
GETABLE LIVER PILLS are confident
ly recommended; they are mild, safe,
prompt and uniform in their action. They
contain no Mercury. Persons may eat

at any time. myll-d&clw

Horrible, rk Trjje:— We heard a story
yesterday, whkdv-if it.be true—and there
seems abundant reastfn to-believe it—is one
pf the mySt horrible that even a sensational
novelist ever worked up for the delectation
of a morbid, mystery-craving palate.
Up to this time there is no positive proof
of ft, blit public.opinion, at least, where one
of tljfc. dramatis person it .resides, is fully per
•snuded that-it is as represented in all its
hideonsness.- -That locality is the bounty
site of a neighboring, county, where two of
the parties to the premeditated crime-have,
until • recently, lived. It seems that a
young Jady from an adjoining Sjate was
visiting that. to’wn last year, and while
there was courtejl by, and engaged, herself
to, a young lawyer of the place. All was
smooth sailing until she returned borne.—
Tfhen she learned that, her parents had
other plans for her future. Shq was told
That her hand wtjs sought by a very wealthy
old mab, and that she must prepare to re
ceive him as her future husband. To her
remonstrances Itnd disclosure of her love
for, and engagement to another, her parents
turned a deaf ear. They had determined
she should marry the old man, and at last,
by arguments, threats and importunities,
brought her so the point of writing to her
lover and breaking off the engagement.
Immediately upon receiving her letter he
left for her home, .and, on arriving there,
soon had an interview. Then was con
cocted the horrible plot. It was settled
between them that slie should marry the
old man, and aft.er getting him to settle his
property on her, the young man was to
have him murdered ! Back home came
her lover, and commenced his preparations.
He soon found a willing tool, who, for the
sum of one thousand dollars, to be paid
when the guilty pair were married, agreed
to go to the old man’s house and murder
him. The marriage, in the meantime, had
taken place, and the would-be assassin
found the old Benedict in the first flush of
his honeymoon. The assassin, from some
cause, did not or could not find an oppor
tunity to do the deed, and finally either re
lented or became doubtful its to the safety
of the job. lie then sought an interview
with his intended victim, and told him of
tho plot, first binding the old man to pay
him four hundred dollars in gold, and to
hold him harmless. The feelings of the
old man can be better imagined than told
in word#. He hardly knew what to do,
but at last concluded to go home and con
front the young wife with the terrible rev
elation. He did so, and was met, of course,
by an indignant denial. The old man was
staggered, but not entirely convinced, and
fearing lie would invoke the law’s aid and
have the matter thoroughly sifted, the wife
wrote at once to her lover all that had
happened, lie realized his peril, and made
preparations to fly. In a day or two he
disappeared, and there the matter stands at
present.
What the old man will finally do is not
known at present. We tell the story as it
was told to us. All the partie's are highly
respectable, and one of them has many ac
quaintances, and probably some relatives
in this city, We do not know, of course,
whether or not there will be atiy more de
velopments, in the horrible affair, but if
there is Wo shall gather up and lay them
before our readers.

The Pacific Railroad and the South.
—lu regard to our Southern States we had
expected that with the settlement of this
troublesome matter of reconstruction they
would have suflicicnt attractions in their
cheap and fertile soil, genial climate and
profitable products, to divert the great gulf
stream of emigration from the West to the
South. But tiiis Pacific Railroad spoils
this calculation; and the people of the
Southern States must proceed more ear
nestly and systematically than they are
now doing in presenting their superior in
ducements to Northern and European men
in search of fortune, or the great tide, but
little broken, will still drift to the fabulous
gold and silver mountains of our new
States and Territories in the West. To
the emigrant with a family Virginia, for in
stance, is a thousand times more desirable
than those wild Western Asiatic' regions ;
and it Is to emigrants with- families that
the S°utli must look for the rebuilding of
her waste places. —New Yoi'k Herald

Factory Strike. —Last week, at the an
nual meeting of the directors and stock
holders of tlieCuthbert Factory, E. McDon
ald, Esq., was elected provisional Presi
dent, and the present Superintendent, Mr.
Kinchen, continued in office.
Upon announcing this action to the op
eratives, all hands, with hut few exceptions,
threw down their shuttles, etc., and retired
from the premises.
No other cause, save disaffection towards
the Superintendent, (who’ is very strict and
attentive to his duty,) was assigned, and
the board, with signal promptness, at once
discharged all the malcontents.
The machinery remained stationary for
several days, the operatives, meanwhile,
being ordered to vacate their cottages,
when taking better thoughtpf the matter,
a majority succumbed, and were again re
ceived, under new and in some instances,
less favorable contracts. A few will lie
permanently excluded.

The CniNAMAN and the Ethiopian. —
It is said that Chinese laborers have been
employed to a considerable extent iu several
of the Louisiana parishes, and have given
good satisfaction. It would be a Curious
and instructive event should the efforts of
mistaken philanthropists anti unscrupulous
politicians to enfranchise the Ethiopian
prove to be the most direct means of driv
ing him out of the country, by inviting the
influx of Mongolians. Yet stranger things
have happened. Asa hired servant, the
Ethiopian would be enconraged and kindly
treated by the Southern people, but as a
voting citizen—however much politicians
may seek to use him—he must expect to be
forever despised. If it is found that China
men will make as profitable laborers, this
feeling against the Ethiopian will work in
favor of the former, and tend gjieatly to
hasten the disappearance of Cuffeefrom the
continen t.— t'daco/jo Times.
A Minister Probably Murdered.—We
learn from the Enfaula News, of Thursday,
that the horse, bujjgy, and some of the
clothing of the Rev. Mr. McKee, a travel
ing Presbyterian Minister, were found last
Monday at Joiner’s bridge, on Pea river.
Mr. McKee himself could not be found. It
seems that the buggy was considerably in
jured, and the horse detached therefrom, but
entangled among the vines in the swamp.
It was supposed he had been murdered aud
thrown in the river.
Cotton Drad.—Farmers from different I
portions of the county report the cottqu
dying in considerably quantities, especially
oq the sandy ridges. They apprehend that
not naore than half a stand can be had. It
is supposed by some that where cotton is
manured with guano it is preserved from
the rust, but Maj. Ricks, who lives in the
upper part of this county, states tl\at his
cotton manured \vitlj guana dies i\s ftist us
any.— JtUr-t Quines Minor, 1 4{h.
Sudden Death.— We regret to chronicle

and highly respected citizen of this place,
who expired about 1 o’clock on Friday
morning. He was at church on the night
previous and seemed to be as well as usual.

WORTHY OF ATTENTION.
To Dr. That. A. Hurley :
1 hereby certify that during last year I was at'ack

used several popular medicines witli but temporary

worse type, if possible, when my medical attendant
ordered Quinine ill large doses—frequent ly r.s high as
60 grains per day, and which must have cost me near

found he prescribed quinine and arse tic combined,
which l refused to take, preferring to let the disease
lake its course. I was almost bloodiest, extremely
exhausted, aud plonouiiced with enlarged Liver and
Ppecn. About this time the advertisement of nur

and since tliat time 1 have seen liea ly a hundred

and would certainly recommend it us preferable to
any other tonic before the public.

To Jas. Ruddle it Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gentlsxkn; This is to certify that I have been
for years a sufferer, aud have tried all the Tonics I
have heard of or seen advertised, with little or no re
lief from any of them. I heard your Hurley’Bitters
highly spoken of, and tried a bottle, with little faith
in it before I commenced, and to mv surprise and
joy, before I finished one bottle, I felt a great deal
better, and firmly believe that on one or two occiutions
it was the means of saving and prolonging my life. X
conscientiously recommend them to ah sufferers as
tbe best Bitters known, and advise them always to ask
for Dr. T. A. Hurley’s, and have no other. You can
use this as you think i roper, if it will benefit others.

nothing can well take its place.
