A distinguished Methodist Minister aud
prominent Temperance Lecturer once re
marked that go where he would, from one
end of the country lo the other, he hardly
ever failed to find Plantation Bitters,
and while he condemned the practice of
using these Bitters too freely, he could not
conscientiously say that he would discard
them from the side-board, for he had him
self experienced beneficial results from their
use, and that, from a long and close obser
vation, he was convinced that when used
moderately, and as a medicine exclusively,
they were all" that was recommended. At
the same time he warned his hearers not to
pull the cork too often, for they were far
too pleasant a tonic to trifle with.

Homicide at Newman.—. A most lament
able homicide occurred at Newnan on
Sunday; one that has inexpressibly shock
ed the people of that community and cast a
feeling of sorrow over all. From the best
information that we can get, it seems that
there had been a game of base ball played,
in which the umpire was Hinton Writrht,
son of the Hon. W. F. Wright, and Ed.
liobinson was one of the principal players.
In rendering the decision, liobinson com
plained that Wright hud decided against
him unjustly. This led to au altercation
upon the ground, without any serious re
sult. The young men parted and did not
meet any more until Sunday when both at
tended the Baptist church at Newnan.—
After service was over the young meu were
the lirst to leave the church. As soon as
they were outside, an altercation arose
between them, in which Robinson was shot
dead by Wright. Our information is that
’four shots were fired, all of which took ef
fect in or near the heart of the unfortunate
young mau. Wright was immediately
taken in charge by the Marshal of Newnan
and taken to the hotel; but he managed to
make his escape, and was still at large yes
terday morning. The impression was that
he would give himself up as soon as he shall
have communicated with his father, who
was on his plantation at the time of* the
homicide. ■ Both of these young men be
longed to highly respectable families. Both
families were on the most intimate terms,
ami both are deeply altiicted by the great
misfortune which has come over their
houses. The father of young Wright, Hon.
Win. F. Wright, is a gentleman well known
In Georgia. He is a lawyer, has represent
ed his couutry in the General Assembly,
and was a candidate for Congress in opposi
tion to Gen. Gartrell, before the war. The
young men were each about twenty years
of age. —Atlanta Era.

Death of Dr. Bolton. —A te'egram re
ceived here on Saturday briefly announced
the sad intelligence of the death of this
eminent physician and estimable citizen.
He died in Albemarle county on Saturday
moraine, after a brief put painful illness.
Dr. Bolton was a native of Savannah,
Ga., and studied medicine at the University
of New York under the .superintendence of
Dr. Valentine Mott. Removing to this
city, lie soon acquired a large ami lucrative
practice, and rapidly rose to distinction in
iiis profession. Fo • years he has been
known throughout Virginia and the whole
South as a skillful surgeou, and particu
larly as an occullst.
During his long professional career in
Richmond, extending over a period of
thirty years, he gained innumerable friends,
but we doubt if he had at his death a sin
gle enemy. An affectionate father and hus
band, a sincere friend, a good citizen—in a
word, a righteous man—he has gone to his
reward, —Richmond ( Va.) Dispatch.
Love, Jealousy, Murder and Suicide.
—lii New York, on Thursday morning,
13th inst.,At 1 o’clock, a young man named
Samuel, D. Talbot, a rejected lover of Miss
Gribner, residing on t s c corner of Mon
tague and Terrence streets, Brooklyn, en
tered the bed room of the young lady and
endeavored to administer chloroform to her
while she was sleeping, it is supposed with
the intention of outraging her person, and
thus obtaining her consent to marriage.
She awoke, screamed and fled to the room
of her sister, Mrs. Flint. Talbot followed
her there and fired two shots from a pistol
at her,* fortunately without, serious effect.
He then fled to his own room, being a visit
or in the house, and them shot himself
dead. The affair occurred in the most
fashionable portion of Brooklyn, and has
created intense excitement there and in
New York. Talbot was recently from Bos
ton, and complained lately of trouble in
the brain.
Rome Post Office. —We are in posses
sion of the following facts in regard to the
Rome post office:
The Rev. ,T. H. Caldwell made application
to have his brother, Ilcv. A. W. Caldwell,
appointed postmaster at this place. The
President, put his name in nomination. As
soon ns Mr. A. W. Caldwell heard of it, he
wrote Ids brother that he could not and
would not take the oath, unless his disa
bilities were removed. liis brother then
withdrew liis name, and put the Rev. Wes
ley Prettyman’s name in nomination, who
was appointed postmaster, hut Pretty man
preferring the Marietta office, asked to he
appointed to that office, which was granted.
P. M. Sheibly then applied and received
the appointment at this place, and wfe pre
sume will take charge of the office on his
return from Washington.— ll»>me Courier.
The Bottom Falling Out. —The Vicks
burg Herald says that “ between Oak Ridge
and the Yazoo river—not far from where
the ‘Wild Man of Warden county’ was
first seen—is a strip of country consisting
of an extensive forest, and of the highest
hills known anywhere in Mississippi. Be
tween the lulls are broad valleys of very
fine arable lands, which are yearly culti
vated. On last Tuesday one of these val
leys, which had been recently plowed and
planted in cotton, three acres wide and two
acres long, making six square acres, sunk
to the depth of over forty feet, leaving an
immense cavern, in which could be obscured
—were it possible to put it there—Mount
Vesuvius.
Remarkable Freak of Nature.— The
most remarkable Ivsus naturce we ever heard
of occurred on Monday'last in East Macon.
A sow had a litter of pigs, still-born, that
were actually halt dog and half pig. The
head and fore feet were those of the dog,
the feet being supplied with claws, and in
every respect resembling those of a puppy.
The balance of the body was that of a pig,
the hind feet having the hoof and shape of
the pig’s hind feet.
We can scarcely believe that such a mon
strosity ever had existence, dead or alive,
and but for the fact that we were assured
that it was so, we should not have recorded
it. —Macon 7’elegraph.
As Usual. —The Yankees have executed
a flank movement on the religions negroes
of Camden,-South Carolina, as they have
every where else. The negroes had engaged
in the enterprise of building a church. The
people of the South, their former masters,
had contributed liberally, but not having
received a sufficient amount, the Yankee
carpet-baggers proposed to help them,
which offer was accepted ; but it has trans
pired that the Puritans have played a sharp
game, and gobbled the titles to the proper
ty, very much to the disgust of the colored
gentlemen.
Crops in Alabama.— The farmers are
already complaining at the backwardness
of the crops, aud some of them assert that
the recent wet, cold weather has ruined the
cotton irretrievably, and we fear that the
weather of yesterday will add to their
troubles. The cotton, we understand, in
some places is rotting in the ground, and
the corn that is above ground looks yellow
and unhealthy. The appearance of thiugs
yesterday was certainly not calculated to
encourage the planters.— Selma Times, 14 tli.
For the South. —Mr. Thomas McElroy,
Enropeau seed grower and importer, 35
Park Place, New York,, has presented to
the proper association about S3OO worth
of valuable seeds for distribution at the
South.
The Columbus Sun takes ground against
an attempt to impeach Governor Bullock,
because it is impracticable, and an unsuc
cessful effort would greatly please him;
and success would not help us, as Ben Con
ley would succeed him.
The Rome Courier says that the Rome.
Railroad Company have served a notice on
the Van Wert Railroad Company, that they
meant to file a bill of injunction against it.

Six Great Remedies
I OF THE AGE.
PURIFY YOUR BLOOD
-mini simpimy.
\_JfaLL the remedies that have heen discover
ed during the present age for the “ thousand ills that
lesh is heir to,” uoue equal this wonderful prepara
tion. Only 15 years have elapsed since the discover
er (who spent a decade in studying, experimenting
mi perfecting it,) first introduced It to the public,
and it is already recognized by the most eminent phy
sicians iu all parts of the country tp be the most sur
{Rising and effective remedy for certain diseases of
they have knowledge. •
ARother Compounds or Syrups of this Root have
hitherto failed to command the sanction of the Facul
ty, because, od being tested, they have been foun I to
contain uoxious ingredients, which neutralize the
■f-'od effects of the Sarsaparil a, and oftentimes injure
thehea th of the patient. It is not so with Hurley’s
{reparation.
This is the pure and genuine extract of the root, and

To Jas. Ruddle <£ Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gkstlbmkn : This is to certify that I have been
for years a sufferer, and have tried all the Tonics I
have heard of or seen advertised, with little or no re
lief from any of them. I heard >Xnir Hurley Bitters
highly spoken of, and tried a bottle, with little faith
in it before I commenced, and to ray surprise and
joy, before I finished one bottle, 1 felt a great deal
better, and firmly believe that on one or two occasions
it was the means of sat ing and prolonging my life. I
conscientiously recommend them to a'l sufferers as
the best Bitteis known, and advise them alwuys to ask
for Dr. T. A. Hurley’s, and have no other. You can
use this as you think i roper, if it will benefit others.
Yours, truly, wc., _

Elixer of Pyrophosphate of Iron
and* Calisaya.
This elegant combination possesses all the ?tonio
properties of Peruvian Bark and Iron, without the
disagreeable taste and bad effects of either, separate
ly or in other preparations, of these valuable medi
cines. It should be taken in all cases when a gentle
tonic impression is required after convalescence from
fevsbs or debilitating diseases, or in those distress
ing irregularities peculiar to females. No female
should be without it, if liable to such diseases, for
nothing can welt take its place.
